The latest semi-scandal involves a television ad in the UK for L'Oreal Elvive Full Restore 5 hair care line (not available in the US). The ad (watch it above) features singer Cheryl Cole praising the collection for making her chestnut locks "full of life, replenished with healthy shine."

There's just one problem. Cole is wearing hair extensions -- and people are angry about it. The London Times reports that Cole has been not-so-secretly sporting extensions for several years now and they are a part of her look, but that hasn't stopped viewers from expressing their outrage.

I think this is as dishonest as showing glaringly false eyelashes in mascara ads...no amount of shampoo or mascara is going to make the consumer look the same as the ad. This isn't supposed to be merely aspirational, this is supposed to be the result of buying and using said product.

Is the rule of 'truth in advertising' applicable any more? You can't make food look bigger or more than it really is...those amazing cheese pulls, notwithstanding. Really, there are laws about this...I guess not in the beauty genre.

Ingredients of TV hair commercials. 1. Start with model on a bad hair day. 2. A secret ingredient, formula X. 3. Close up of hair follicle being transformed by secret ingredient. 4. Happy model swings her beautiful shiny head of hair. Options: 3x stronger, 4x softer, 5x shinier etc. Scripted and oh so boring.

If you have good real human hair extensions, than it's real natural hair. Just not the hair that's growing out of the person's scalp but attached to the hair that's growing out of the scalp. So that hair needs to be cared for more diligently than the scalp hair. If the product is good for scalp hair, it's good for extensions. In my opinion just say it's good for all hair types.

So just tell the truth. This is how your natural hair, with hair extensions, could look. I watched the clip. That girl has gorgeous hair. Who cares how she got it as long as she tells us so we can try to copy it. What beautiful hair!

This is shocking? Really? This is almost 2010. Even people who do not live in New York, Paris, L.A. or Rome cannot be surprised by the thousands of tricks used to shine up the old apple. Come on now.

Wait!? You mean all those beautiful women in the ads don't really look like that?

No kidding!! It's sad how much 'work' is done in these ads and commercials to distort these women...who look great without all the camera tricks and photoshopping.

Just like John Lennon once told Sean - all commercials are lies.
