Early Obama supporter David Geffen got a nice thank-you gift from the White House when he landed one of the state dinner's most coveted seats: the spot next to Michelle Obama. Geffen sat to the first lady's left while Prime Minister Singh, the evening's honoree, sat to her right. In February 2007, Geffen threw a Hollywood party that raised $1.3 million for the presidential contender.

At a different table, President Obama sat between Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Prime Minister Singh's wife Gursharan Kaur, Carol Lee of Politico reports. Lee also writes that the seating scheme in which there was no head table was intentionally symbolic. Instead the first lady, president, vice president, and second lady each played host at their own tables.
