Poll: GOP Divided Over Party's Direction, Leaders

First Posted: 3/18/10 Updated: 5/25/11

Gop Split

Washington Post:

The Republican rank and file is largely in sync with GOP lawmakers in their staunch opposition to efforts by President Obama and Democrats to enact major health-care legislation, but a new Washington Post poll also reveals deep dissatisfaction among GOP voters with the party's leadership as well as ideological and generational differences that may prove big obstacles to the party's plans for reclaiming power.

I have more of an insider perspective from one of my oldest friends.
In very simple terms, they honestly believe the U.S.A. has a mandate from
Jesus.
They do not fear Armageddon. They actually welcome it.

To them, this is very much a Holy War and the fulfillment of biblical prophecy.

They watch any program on TV that supports this delusion and it greatly bothers
me, because they are my friends.

To me this is dangerous religious extremism.

Anyone who does not believe what they believe will end up in hell.

I blame organized religion using these extremist views to manipulate votes
thus giving more power to organized religion.

Very well said, I have seen that among many people I know also.

It is frightening to see that their aim is to take this country back to the dark ages.

I view them as no different than the Tal!b@n, their thinking is so narrow they can look through a keyhole with both eyes.

The teabaggers are definantly the more vocal opposition at the moment, but they can only accomplish so much. Sure, they might be able to push 15 or 20 congressional seats, but they have absolutely zero appeal or staying power within mainstream America. This makes it virtually impossible for a teabagger to have enough broad appeal to win the presidency. And any Republican at this time in history that is'nt pandering to the farthest reaches of the right wing, will be put through the meat grinder by the teabaggers in the primarys. i know conservatives are feeling pretty happy with themselves right now, because their artistic enough to draw little Hitler mustaches on Obama posters. But when it comes to electoral math I don't think the Republican party is much closer then they were in the 08 election. Small box with a very loud echo.

Cheering for the useless war, for Bush spending spree, and turning a blind eye on the economy about to tank. That's where they were.
09:28 AM on 12/01/2009
That is right!

Bush came into office with a balanced budget and a surplus from Clinton, he had a memo from Clinton that Bin Laden was determined to attack the U.S.

Bush and his staff chose to ignore that memo.

By the time Bush left office he did nothing for the economy but continue more "Reagonomics" with the "trickle down" "tax cuts for the rich" and the economy crashed.

In order to try to save his legacy he came up with the bailout program that he implemented before leaving office.

We have had Republican rule for over 30 years total between Reagan and the Bushes and their economic policies have destroyed our country.

Republicans have supported banks and corporations with the "trickle down" "tax cuts for the rich" that sent jobs overseas but still the ignorant "teapartiers" can't seem to separate fact from fiction.

They cling to ideology and religion instead of looking at their wallets.

A Democrat didn't do this to them, they did it to themselves by voting in the wrong people and want to blame anybody else for the problem.

Poll question:
Do you plan to vote in the 2010 elections?:
Republicans: Yes 81%
Independents: Yes 65%
Democrats: Yes 56%

If anyone thinks, because of low approval ratings, that the GOP won't pick up a number of seats in 2010, think again. As disappointing as Democrats can be, do we really want more Michele Bachmann's in Congress?
Turn out is everything in mid-terms and if these numbers hold, it will be disastrous.

that's why if dems had any sense at all they would show up even more so than at Obama's election and finish off the remnants of the republican party and let it fracture into something that could be plausibly called a legitimate opposition party.

The numbers for Dems are low because some are dissatisfied with some issues, but when the time comes we will regroup and get rid of whatever Repbs are left, you watch.

Lets not get overconfident. Our worst enemy is getting overconfident, and thinking "I don't need to vote, who is going to vote for these guys?" We still need the same fire from 2008 and need to get elected more progressive candidates. It will be very easy to let these guys back into power if we don't keep our "foot on the gas".

Deeply unsatisfied!??? Geezus...they are told by the thugs in Congress and ones without office, to be dissatisfied, to scream bloody murder, to believe the lies they are told...so what would you expect. Lookee...old Lindsey is calling for a real exam of spending that this administration has done. In essence blaming the economy crisis on Obama. And the gd lemmings will believe it. Conscious overt lying should be a cause for censureship or excusal from Congress. Or facts should be included in their hasty stupid statements.

Their lack of unity is just one of the many reasons they're losing districts like the NY 23 that haven't gone blue since Abner Doubleday invented baseball.
