Carlos Dunlap DUI: Arrested Gator Charged With Driving Under The Influence

MARK LONG   12/ 1/09 06:55 PM ET   AP

Carlos Dunlap Dui

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Top-ranked Florida will be without one of its best pass rushers against No. 2 Alabama in the Southeastern Conference championship game.

Defensive end Carlos Dunlap was arrested early Tuesday and charged with driving under the influence, just days before the biggest game of the season.

Coach Urban Meyer said Tuesday after practice that Dunlap won't play Saturday, adding that there is no timetable for his return. Meyer called Dunlap's actions "stunning."

"Carlos obviously made a very poor decision," Meyer said. "I have not spoke to him or his family yet. He's not going to play. But I want to visit with him and his family first and go from there."

Meyer acknowledged that the situation was a distraction as his team prepares for a matchup that has national championship implications. But he also said his players might be able to overcome it, much like they did flulike symptoms and linebacker Brandon Spikes' suspension for dirty play.

"We've had distraction after distraction," Meyer said. "This is a rather serious one, obviously, so it is a distraction. Sometimes this team's found ways to get a little tighter in distractions. We've had a few of them this year."

Dunlap, a 20-year-old junior from North Charleston, S.C., was arrested at 3:25 a.m. He was released on his own recognizance about six hours later during his initial appearance at the Alachua County Jail. Judge Mary Day Coker admonished Dunlap for underage drinking, and said he cannot possess alcohol, illegal drugs or prescription drugs that are not prescribed for him.

He was told not to drive without a license, and if caught driving without a license, he would violate the terms of his release. The judge released Dunlap without bond because he has no prior adjudications and no failures to appear in court.

Wearing a jail-issued, green-and-white striped jumpsuit, Dunlap spoke softly when asked questions and always replied "Yes, ma'am," to the judge.

According to Gainesville Police spokesman Keith Kameg, an officer was dispatched to check out reports of a reckless driver near campus. When the officer spotted the car stopped at an intersection, he noticed the red 2000 Chrysler was not moving through several green lights.

The officer found Dunlap slumped over and asleep at the wheel. The officer woke up Dunlap through a cracked window, but he "would only open his eyes momentarily and then fall back asleep," Kameg said.

The officer unlocked the door, put the car in park and turned off the ignition. Dunlap got out and "was very groggy and had difficulty speaking and listening to instructions," Kameg said.

According to police, Dunlap had watery and bloodshot eyes, and there was a smell of alcohol. Dunlap failed a field sobriety test, refused a breath test and was booked.

Dunlap, the defensive MVP of the Bowl Championship Series national title game in January, has started every game this season for the defending champs. He has 35 tackles and is tied for the team lead with seven sacks.

Without him, the Gators will turn to Justin Trattou, Jaye Howard and William Green to pick up the slack opposite Jermaine Cunningham.

Meyer declined to talk about Dunlap's future, including if he would play in the team's bowl game. Dunlap had been considered a top-10 pick in the NFL draft, and many expect him to leave school early in January.

"I haven't thought about anything other than the word stunning's probably appropriate," Meyer said. "He's not really had an issue before. He comes from a good family."

Shame ... I was hoping the Gators would have no excuses after the whoopin Bama puts on them ... and it will happen.

I don’t normally post to these boards but I am baffled by the people posting here that that keep wondering if there will be any sanctions against Dunlap. The article clearly states that he is benched for Saturday’s SEC Championship game.

Coach Urban Meyer said Tuesday after practice that Dunlap won't play Saturday, adding that there is no timetable for his return. Meyer called Dunlap's actions "stunning."

Coach Meyer benched Spikes after his incident, a conflict on the field that the other player admitted he started.
The coaches have consistently dealt with discipline problems quickly and done it in such a manner that the players come back to the field without displaying attitude problems.
Are people reading something different than what I am reading?
12:52 PM on 12/02/2009
No, you are reading it correctly. People are taking sides - this time its against the Gators, not the specific incident. In my humble UF opinion.

Many commenters in this thread must be confusing UF with FSU (Free Shoes University). It is the Bowden style to play convicts, not the Gators.

Re: Strength of schedule
1. The Gator SEC opponents seem to bring their best game to the Gators, regardless of their "ranking", eg. Ole Miss 2008. Two reasons for that are; A. Face time on TV (Gators get televised a lot) and B. The Gators are usually ranked in the top 5 and gives anyone who wins, bragging rights.

2. Middle tear SEC teams can beat high ranked non-SEC teams (So.Car. beat Clemson and Georgia beat Ga. Tech.) and would probably win in a game with any of the #s 4, 5, and 6. Maybe not with the Ducks. They have a top 10 team.

In defense of the Gator's less than spactacular showing mid season, Tim was comming off a concussion and I'm sure the game plan babied him (he's really just a kid and not Superman).

Regardless, things are back to normal. The Gators have distractions (Dunlap, but we are 4 or 5 deep so should be np) and the Gator Bait(s) are spewing their vitriol.

It's great to be a Florida Gator!!! Go Gators!!!

Nope, knowing Urban Meyer, we fully expected Dunlap to be suspended for the pre-game breakfast. After all, if eye-gouging is only worth a half, this should be nada.

Urban Meyer has kicked more top players off the team than many other teams can even recruit. While I had hoped he would have suspended Spikes for the game from the getgo, he was actually following protocol.

I know that this isn't what happened here, but someone just told me that in Washington, if you're asleep in your car in a parking spot and drunk, that's a DUI. Is that true in every state?

Great message -- give people incentive to drive drunk, because you might look like you're sober or avoid the po-po while you're on the move, making a DUI less likely.

It's true here in Florida....I think just about everywhere. You must not be in the driver's seat and they must not be able to find the keys to the ignition.

When asked where he'd been, Dunlap was a little hazy but told authorities he'd just dropped off his friend, Rachel Uchitel.

If Florida is an implied consent state, Carlos Dunlap will automatically have his license suspended.

When I was in college, my knowledge of alcohol abuse was limited. I went to what was known as a party school, and I usually didn't have to drive when I was drinking, but I sometimes did. If I had been stopped by police during the times I drove in questionable state, I'd have been cited for a DUI. I was lucky and never did. I learned to drink responsibly. I've also grown up over the last 45 years.

Now, however, it seems that alcohol use and abuse have increased markedly. I hope that Mr. Dunlap learns from the experience. Urban Meyer needs to learn that alcohol abuse has nothing to do with "coming from a good family." It will be interesting to see if he actually suspends Dunlap.

By the way, if you're a starter and you get suspended, but you get to be on the sidelines, that's still a punishment, because you've let your team down, and you know it.

They're not that good anyway. Save for one game all they do is play patsies all year. Google their schedule and see all the doormats they play; there are easily 20 teams that would be 12-0 now if they had Florida's schedule.
05:26 PM on 12/01/2009
Compared to other SEC teams FL had a pretty easy 2009 schedule. It doesn't help that the media is infatuated with Tebow, so a lot is expected of them. (I'm pretty sure the commentators are in love with him).

LSU, Bama, and even Arkansas AND Miss. State had harder schedules this year.

That being said, I'm pretty sure the FL/Bama game will be a good watch.
07:53 PM on 12/01/2009
Umm,.. Florida beat LSU, Arkansas and Mississippi State this year. We don't have to compare strength of schedules. They settled it on the field. What made those schools' schedules so hard is playing the Gators, get it?

And by the way, all the haters saying Carlos will play because of some sort of win-at-all-cost attitude at Florida should note that he has been suspended indefinitely, in spite of the fact that there as yet been no adjudication of guilt.

Do you mean the other SEC teams Florida played? Like Arkansas, LSU and Miss. State? The SEC has more teams going to bowl games (some good ones) than any other conference and it's generally agreed to be the toughest conference out there.

And yes, a lot is expected of them, and so when they only win by 10 or even 3, they are called over-rated. 12-0 is not easy no matter what, but playing in such a pressure cooker environment makes it even harder.

I guarantee you Dunlap plays Saturday. Meyer didn't even have the backbone to suspend Spikes for an entire game against VANDY of all teams after an eyegouge that played out on national tv. There's no way he'll sit out a star player for the SEC Championship...hell, the police could've found dead hookers in the trunk and the worst Dunlap would get for the Alabama game would be something along the lines of "suspended for the duration of the National Anthem."

Granted I'm an Alabama alumni so I guess I'm technially biased here, but I was incredibly disappointed with Meyer over the Spikes thing too and I had no dog in that fight. It was definitely telling about Meyer, though. I expect we'll see a repeat Saturday, but that's fine. I don't want to hear any "well our best defensive player was sitting out the game" excuses if we beat them, and I DEFINITELY don't want to hear any "we won and our best defensive player was sitting out the game" bragging if we lose.

But it's a moot point because there's no way Meyer has the stones to suspend the drunk.
05:04 PM on 12/01/2009
Okay. What about the Alabama player who chased and pushed around his girlfriend?

He will not be suspended. Coaches couldn't care less about this stuff. A football coach would have an entire team of Charlie Manson's if they though it would win games.
02:18 PM on 12/01/2009
What's the big deal? He plays for an SEC school - he'll get a one day suspension (today, probably) and be back on the field by Wednesday. He WILL play on Saturday.

That's just how they do things down there.

I am a Gator - fan and alumna, and when I saw this news this a.m. I nearly blew a gasket. One of the most important games in this player's (and team's) career and he pulls this. What, pray tell, was he even doing out past 11 pm? Isn't there a curfew? These players had practice this am was he going to show up drunk? I hope he has to look each player in the eye and apologize for his selfish behavior. And if they win this weekend (correction, WHEN they win) he should not get a ring. He will be suspended for this game. But I will say, for all the people making cracks about Flordia players, a UGA player was just arrested for the same thing. This happens. It's not one school or another. Please don't muddy the water with unsupported statements.

Oh, one more thing. GO GATORS!

Sounds like "we report, you decide." By "they" do you mean ESPN reporters or other sports fans/posters? No different than when FSU players were called "Criminoles" or other such names.

Not making excuses, I want Dunlap kicked off the team, but if you research the numbers and episodes, you'll find these events happen pretty much across the board in a fairly consistent manner.
01:19 PM on 12/01/2009
it will be interesting to see how this develops. if urban was at notre dame. he knows what the results would be. that is why he is not there. since this is a southern school. i would not be surprised if it was deferred to the end of the season. hey notre dame this is why these southern teams win the national title.

If Carlos Dunlap had played at Notre Dame, his season would now be over, and this wouldn't be much of an issue. So I guess CW really has been looking out for his players...

We already know Meyer is an exceptional coach--now we'll see what kind man he is.

He can assert "innocent until proven guilty" till the cows come home, but the dude was passed out at a stop light at 3:25 in the am and I can only assume, blew a legally intoxicated BAC.

(BTW, I love the language in the article... "The officer found Dunlap...asleep at the wheel." LOL! When you've been drinking and you can't stay awake, you're not "falling asleep" you're passing out! You don't "wake up" you come to.)

So, the door's now open for 'Bama and TCU in the BCS NCG.

BAMA doesn't deserve to be in the National Championship Game. They are overrated. I predict they lose to FL and lose their bowl game as well. Just like last year. It will be TX and FL in the National Championship game and I hope TX wins.
05:16 PM on 12/01/2009
...lol.

Compared to last year Texas has been playing pretty "meh".

You've got to be out of your mind if you think the SEC is overrated this college season.
