Obama's Afghan War Plan: Nine Key Points

First Posted: 3/18/10   Updated: 5/25/11

The basic details of President Obama's new Afghanistan strategy have been slowly emerging over the last 2 days, providing an increasingly clear picture of what he will discuss in his much-anticipated prime-time speech to the nation tonight from the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Obama will announce that he is deploying 30,000 new troops to the region, but will also stress that the U.S. commitment is not open-ended, and that he plans to begin bringing most of the troops home within three years.

The slideshow below outlines the key facets of Obama's strategy, based on numerous news reports. Please let us know what you think about various aspects of the plan -- and whether you agree or disagree with Obama's strategy -- and also tell us in the comments section what you'd like to hear from the president tonight.

30,000 additional troops within six months

Obama plans to send 30,000 troops to the region over the next 6 months, with the first Marines arriving as early as Christmas. The BBC reports that the 30,000 troops will include 9,000 Marines and 21,000 soldiers. The deployment is much faster than originally planned.
