John 16 33: Tim Tebow's Eye Black Bible Passage (PHOTO)

First Posted: 03/18/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 03:50 PM ET

Tim Tebow frequently wears eye black that references Bible verses. In last week's game against Florida State, his eye black said "Heb 12 1-2." This week he has written "John 16:33," referencing a passage from the Gospel of John from the New Testament.

John 16:33 reads:

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.

No. 1-ranked Florida faces No. 2-ranked Alabama in a critical game today. The winner captures the SEC championship and will advance to the BCS National Championship Game for a shot at the college football national championship.

There are times when right becomes left and left becomes right. And everyone becomes full of crap. Let the kid express his religion while we agitate for healthcare reform. He is a non-issue And sincei have no

It has been mentioned in most of these threads before, but bears repeating:

If you put a bunch of white marks all over your eyeblack patches, doesn't that defeat the purpose of wearing them? Why not glitter or mylar?

If the patches had been solid black, he might have seen the defender who intercepted him in the end zone and not lost the game. The lord moves in mysterious ways, I guess.

I am a religious person, and a Christian but I'm not a born again right wing nut job. Must we clobber eachother with our religious beliefs? We are one nation under God, NOT one nation under Christ.

TheThumb, you're a christian? Do you know what a christian is? Little Christ... You need to change your name from christian to a wolf in sheeps clothing!

You're a genius. Christians are followers of Christ. America gives it's people the right to do whatever they choose.

Tim Tebow is an amazing man!! I wish I could say that all the criticism about him crying and how he demonstrates his faith is surprising, but its not! We live in a very darkened world. It saddens me to know that there are still so many people who don't know what their here for. To glorify God! The talent that God has placed in Tim on the football field is extraordinary, but the gift of spreading His word is so much more than that!!! Those "little versus" touch more lives than you may realize! My four old wants to be just like Tebow! Not only because he's a phenomenal football player, but because he loves JESUS CHRIST! Tim is an amazing minister! Through those versus', he spreads God's word without saying anything! And millions of people see it every Sat.! KUDOS TO TIM!!! We are only given a certain amount of time on this earth and God is the only person who knows when that time is up! So, I pray that God convicts your hearts and I pray that you find His love through Jesus Christ! I also want to praise God for giving us, Gator Nation, the opp. to have Tim as our QB! It saddens me to know that he will no longer be on the field after Jan. 1, but I'm happy knowing that we'll always be on the same team with God! GO TEAM GOD!!!! lol.....

If he chooses to wear a Bible Verse that is is right. It is called freedom of speech. As you have your beliefs so do we as followers of Christ. Anytime someone show their love for the lord :people like you love to take them down. Long after football he will still be a child of God. He has great things in store for him. Jesus was persucuted for his teachings, this will always go on ; Christ will win in the end. There are many of us out their who feel just as Tim Tebow does and you can have it too. God be with you all.

I am kind of amazed at all of the comments critical of Tim Tebow because he has scripture on his eye black. I must have missed something, because I do not see him trying to force anything down others throats That is his identity. He defines himself by his faith. Way live in a world where people are criticized for not being genuine, for being phonies, for trying to be people pleasers, yet here, we have a guy who is being himself and people are throwing all kinds of criticism at him.

Many years from now, he may be too old to play football, but he will still see himself as a child of God. For some people, football is their identity. Tebow, happens to be blessed with the ability to play that game and play very well. He also knows that there is something greater than football. In the same way, someone can be a great trial lawyer (or a great doctor or politician), but there is more to life than practicing law.

This is not a christian nation. It IS a nation with a lot of so-called christians who cherry pick their beliefs that they want all of us to adopt or placate. I for one will always find great humor in their great level of hypocrisy. Just three words, Jan and Paul Crouch, and I am falling on the ground holding my sides with laughter!
11:08 AM on 12/15/2009
Who is Jan and Paul Crouch? I'm not being smart; I realy do not know.

I wonder if he knows this passage from Matthew 6: 6-8: "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."

It isn't praying to have a verse on your body as advertising.

This would be a witness of his faith.
You don't have to look up the verse to find out what it is if you don't want to know what he believes.

Kuddos to Tebow for living what he believes.
He has been very successful and is giving credit to his belief in God.

I applaud his personal expression of his faith.

Killian, you've taken something that was meant for good out of context. You should read your bible more since you seem to know about it....

I don't care about the tears; it's an emotional moment, his last game, the Heisman on the line (as if he didn't know he'd be in the running) the national spotlight. He's a 20 something kid. But the in-your-face bible thumping makes me cringe. What if it had been a Koran verse as others posted here? All he!! would have broken loose.

And we pray to our lord
who we know is American
He rules from on high
and speaks to us through middle men
And he sheppherds his flock
We call out and we praise his name
We supports us in war
He presides over football games.

(from "frail grasp of the big picture" by the Eagles.)
10:24 PM on 01/01/2010
God is international; He loves us all, not just Americans.

I'm pretty sure that God doesn't need to preside over games, but he does bless those who believe and act on their beliefs and prepare...

I think that those who are put-off are overreacting. I don't necessarily like it myself because it seems a bit in-your-face, but on the other hand, so what.

Tebow walks the walk. He goes to prisons to preach the gospels, he goes to the philippines to do mission work. He is always looking for ways to help the community. He is one athlete that should be a role model to kids

Yeah, memorize these Bible passages and we'll give you food!

Christian missionaries are truly God's gift to the Earth. Especially Tim Tebow.

Anyhoo, I'm sure Gary Danielson of CBSwill be able to cure Timmy's pain, in a very intimate fashion:

Gary Daniels is a gator hater. He makes me sick. I hope they fire him. Typical comment from Gary: Gators are trailing in the second half and gators make some yards and look to be starting a comeback and here is the verbatim quote from Gary Daniels after a Tebow completion, uttered in great excitement: "You have to cut off the head of the snake...."

there he is urging Alabama to cut off the head of the gators which he compares to a snake.

CBS should make Gary issue an apology forthwith and then they should fire him.
