Annise Parker, Running For Houston Mayor, Hit By Anti-Gay Attacks

Annise Parker

The Associated Press:

Annise Parker's mayoral campaign Web site bio reads like a catalog of campaign catch phrases: She has been Houston's City Controller and a member of city council. She's for job creation, against irresponsible spending and is tough on crime.

Until the last line: "Annise Parker and her life partner, Kathy Hubbard, have been together since 1990. They have two children."

Anise Parker will be the next mayor of Houston, and she will be great in that job.

"You don't have many cases where you have an older straight, black male supported by conservatives matched up against a younger white female who happens to be gay, and is backed by non-establishment sources," Murray said. "Normally, you see progressive whites allied with African-Americans. This is exposing the same fault line we saw nationally in Prop 8."

*************

The above is really testament to how much people just hate gays. It's as simple as that.

Racists align with those they have historically discriminated to combat the gay presence.

Serial killers in New York can still marry, while serving in prison, if they want, but not gays....no, serial killers won't defile the institution, but the gays, they will!

It's truly tragic, too, that had not a group of sexist, racist, and homophobic men sat down thousands of years ago and produced The Bible, full of patriarchal bias, religion wouldn't be used as a justification for what is, in essence, just raw contempt for gays.

I'm ashamed of my country for its flagrant hypocrisy and for its tolerance of rampant ignorance.

You seem to be implying here that conservatives are racist.

Serial killers can only marry members of the opposite sex--an inherently natural union, the moral failings of the individuals notwithstanding.

"It's truly tragic, too, that had not a group of sexist, racist, and homophobic men sat down thousands of years ago and produced The Bible, full of patriarchal bias, religion wouldn't be used as a justification for what is, in essence, just raw contempt for gays."

And you wonder why religious folks want none of your gay agenda....Peter, Peter, Peter.....

You're actually justifying serial killers being able to marry while gays cannot.

Unbelievable. But you illustrate my point.

And no, I do not wonder in the least why religious folks want none of my gay agenda (translation: basic civil equality and dignity). Not at all.

I'm done with you. Get lost.

Nice thing about a democracy is, everyone gets a vote and everyone can vote as they choose.

Some folks don't want to vote for a lesbian. I guess that's their choice.

Because I would never vote for a raging bigot or homophobe.

Is she the image that Houston wants to project? Well that's up to Houston. I pray for the day when people treat gay people the same as everyone else.

Are you serious? Annise Parker should not be mayor because she's gay. Her sexual preference is not the question, is she capable of doing the job for the good of the people. If she is competent, then she deserves your vote!

living in houston, i can tell you it is polarized like most of america... we have a pacifica station here and pretty of conservative talk radio.... we have a very high number of "independents". reading comments in the post a very large number of independents who were "undecided" are offended by the anti-gay literature that was posted.

Even if all other things were equal, I could never be a conservative, because to be one, you have to define yourself by what you're against. You might be against gays, choice, free love, immigrants, or taxes, but you have to be against something to join that club. I would much rather define myself by what I'm for, which includes human rights, equality, an expanding middle class and a better world. It is so sad to see people who can only define themselves by what they're against winning all the arguments.

Very well said,(wrote). This is just A-typical thinly veiled racist tactics of the wrongly named right. Racism is just confined to race either for those who'll try to comment on that. All the repubs do now days is demean, degrade and divide. Our forefathers really were onto something w/the,"United we stand, divided we fall.", cliche'. Because as long as we all find some way to dislike, disagree or hate one another, we will never be able to hold politicians accountable for their lobbyist practices in voting. And the bottom line, who cares if she has a partner? Is she good for the city?

That sounds mild compared to the homophobic "vote for traditional marriage" mailer I received yesterday recommending Gene Locke for mayor. I was just speechless at how ridiculous and offensive it was.

On the back side they listed the candidates - and their recommendations for mayor, district a and at-large two - there are gays/lesbians in each of the run off races - and there's an asterisk by the names of the gays and lesbians that refers to a footnote - "Homosexual lifestyle". Freaking astericks marking the lesbians!

The front has rambling screed referencing a bible verse - and this gem..."We have a choice on December 12th. We can either stand up and fight for the traditional family and marriage (one man one woman) or allow the radical homosexual activists (with their out of state money) elect a lesbian for mayor." "Radical homosexual actists"!!!!!

I thought the last paragraph was hilarious - "I have received dozens of pieces of hate mail and threats on my life for taking a stand."

I thought...only dozens?

The last group you can safely h@te is gays. One by one, the targets of h@ters have had their rights recognized. Even in California you can pass a proposition specifically denying equality to one group of people. Where is the 14th Amendment, people?

What people on this comment section do not understand is that Houston has one of the largest gay communities in the country. The LGBT Caucus is very powerful and influential in the Houston community. It was the gay community that put Bill White over the top in the last few elections and they will do the same for Annise Parker. All major urban centers in Texas are Democratic areas and Obama won all of them.

Sadly, these attacks do work. In our last mayoral election in Dallas the conservatives played the same hateful game. Lots of emails and whisper campaigns and robocalls warning against the consequences of electing an openly gay mayor. The winner of course disavowed himself of the attacks but he won. The loosing candidate was not in my opinion a good choice and would have just kissed up to the status quo here, but I had to vote for him after answering machine was filled by this antigay hate. He lost. The bigots won.

Not all of us. I, too, am appalled by the takeover of the conservative side by haters and paranoids. We desperately need a better name for the extremists who are trying to brand themselves with a respectable label, while violating every tenet of real conservatism in the book. I would suggest "Republifascists".

I am a conservative. I don't agree with discrimination against gay people. I don't march in the ugly lockstep with the idiot birthers, climate-change deniers, religious bigots and closet racists who want to portray themselves as mainstream America. They are NOT mainstream America.

It's the 21st Century. We have a black president. We have black and/or female governors, mayors, cabinet members, CEOs, etc. Yet we still have people who think it is just fine and dandy to publicly spout their anti-gay bigotry and claim that their hatred is in defense of marriage or families. It's unreal.

Good grief, when will the haters ever learn? The ONLY thing that should matter is who would be a better mayor. Vote for the person who represents your views, and leave the personal stuff out of it.

It never ceases to amaze me that the same people who scream about "big government" and "governmental intrusion into our lives" are the exact same people who are peeking into bedrooms and passing judgement on people based on who they love.

I wonder if I'll live long enough to see this country really enter the 21st century. I hope so.

As an MD, he probably has first-hand experience dealing with the unhealthy consequences of homosexuality. No wonder he doesn't want to promote it further.
