George Stephanopoulos Joining "Good Morning America" As Anchor

Politico's Mike Allen reports what industry-watchers have been expecting for the last week: George Stephanopoulos will be joining "Good Morning America" as anchor. ABC is expected to make an announcement Thursday.

Allen adds that Stephanopoulos may begin anchoring the morning show — along with co-anchor Robin Roberts, and recently appointed newsreader JuJu Chang — as soon as Monday.

Diane Sawyer's final "GMA" broadcast is Friday; she takes the reins at "World News" on December 21.

Current "GMA" newsreader Chris Cuomo has reportedly been offered a job co-anchoring "20/20" with Elizabeth Vargas.

Stephanopoulos may remain as host of his Sunday program, "This Week," for a transition period but will eventually give it up to focus exclusively on "GMA."

He and his wife, actress Ali Wentworth, were seen apartment-hunting in New York over Thanksgiving weekend, and have reportedly been scouting schools for their two daughters, Elliott and Harper, to attend in New York.

Love George Stephanopolous on the News! Can he be witty on GMA and funny enough to co-anchor with the nice but very boring Robin? Definitely not a strong enough team to keep people from switching to the Today show. George stay on the News!!! ABC find someone with Diane's wit and sense of humor to keep me form falling asleep while listening to Robyn. Sam Champion is the only one left on GMA with a great sense of humor!

I am disappointed in the choice. I've always felt George Stephanopoulos came across as a very arrogant man, and with Chris Cuomo leaving too, I will certainly try the other morning shows after many years of loyalty to ABC.

As long as Chris Cuomo and Robin stay on GMA it isn't a bad show. I mean, what is so great about Matt Lauer, and, I just don't get Meridith Viera at all. You can always see her eyes scanning the teleprompter. I think George will lend some gravitas to GMA. Yes, he and Charlie were rude to Barack Obama when he was running for president, but, It's tame compared to the stuff the Republican members of Congress, Cheney, and Palin keep piling on Obama. Maybe Stephanopoulous will bring in both sides when these inane charges are leveled from the RNC. Maybe.

Never cared for Cuomo in the morning and Ms Sawyer has certainly earned the position of evening news anchor. Stephanopoulus will give the morning show political gravitas and add personality.

I agree as well. Cuomo's heart is in the right place, but he is just NOT made for live TV. Stiff and awkward. I think Georgie might do quite well. Robin is excellent and I think she and Sam will loosen him up a little and unsettle him a little which could be entertaining. JuJu's very talented and an award winner. A lot will depend on their chemistry as a group, but all around I'm cautiously optimistic.
