Tavern On The Green Prepares To Auction Treasures

NEW YORK — If you want to own a piece of New York City's landmark Tavern on the Green restaurant, get ready to open your wallet.

The Central Park restaurant's crystal chandeliers, silver candelabras, stone sculptures, art nouveau mirrors and other decorative items are being sold at an auction from Jan. 13-14.

Guernsey's Auction House is handling the sale.

The current operators filed for bankruptcy after the city didn't renew their license to run the restaurant. The auction house says the sale proceeds will help settle creditors' claims.

Restaurateur Dean J. Poll is expected to take over in January. But he has said he will close the restaurant for two years if he's not allowed to begin renovations by then.
