Tom Ford Explains How A Candy Bar Commercial Made Him Want To Direct (VIDEO)

When fashion designer turned director Tom Ford appeared on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" on Tuesday, he immediately mentioned he grew up in Texas. "And you got into fashion. Does that happen a lot?" Fallon asked.

"It was hard. I think people just kind of come out the way they come out. I came out and I started moving furniture around, and looking at things," he joked. "I probably came out in a little suit. I think you're just born the way you're born."

He went on to talk about how as a teenager at NYU he wanted to be an actor, so he found an agent and booked his first commercial. He declined to name what the commercial was for fear of people digging it up, but said that it was for a candy bar and "my big line was 'It's still big!'" The director didn't like his delivery of the line, and Ford recalled "I remember thinking at that very moment you don't know what you're doing, I'm dying to be on the other side of the camera."

"A Single Man" comes out in limited released this Friday.
