Rick Warren Publicly Condemns Uganda Anti-Gay Law (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 03/18/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 03:55 PM ET

Pastor Rick Warren, after weeks of avoiding the issue, has publicly condemned a Ugandan law that makes it legal to give people the death penalty just for being gay.

Addressed directly to the pastors of Uganda, Warren's video message said he "completely oppose[s] and vigorously condemn[s]" the bill.

Warren also defensively suggested he would prefer to work behind the scenes, but he was forced to go to the media due to accusations that he was associated with the effort in Uganda. He said "this terrible bill" is "unjust, it's extreme, and it's un-Christian."

Truth Wins Out, a non-profit devoted to fighting anti-gay propaganda, responded positively.

"We applaud Rick Warren for speaking out with force and clarity on a bill that would lead to the persecution and prosecution of gay and lesbian Ugandans," executive director Wayne Besen said. "Today, Warren showed true moral courage and stood for what is right and just. We urge other leading pastors and world leaders to stand up and condemn Uganda's Anti-Homosexuality Bill."

Warren was questioned on the issue because he used to be close to the Ugandan pastor pushing the anti-gay bill. He is also very influential among the Uguandan elite.

They share a vocational kinship; they're both greedy, power-mongering heretics.

Well, I used to live out there near Warren's church and a lot of people suspected he was gay himself. So, if true, this self-loathing homosexuality would make sense and dovetail the rest of these Reep ministers and politicians. They hate what they are....

As for why Obama has anything to do with this guy, I have no idea and frankly it disgusts me.

I've net Warren and he was very nice.'x and I've been defending him for like ten years. But now, I'm learning that he says reasonable things to the mainstream press, but when he's in front of his audience, he says less reasonable stuff. Jesus hated hypocrites and I don't know what He would have thought of Warren's hot and cold behavior.

Warren is a heretic and a charlatan. His religious ideology is not Christian in any manner, but he is very skilled at wrapping it up in Pseudo-Christian rhetoric.

While it is good that Warren spoke out against Uganda, it was his books, ideas and influence that set the ball rolling in the first place!

Africa is the new frontier for radical evangelicals as attendances fall in the US and in Europe.
