Lord Christopher Monckton: Meet A Leader Of Climate Change Denial (VIDEO)

Huffington Post   First Posted: 03/18/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 03:55 PM ET

While tens of thousands of NGO's, environmental activists, government officials and journalists have descended on the climate talks in Copenhagen, a small but vocal number of energy industry lobbyists and climate change deniers are staging events to put forward their point of view.

At one such event held by Americans For Prosperity, a right-wing group with funding ties to Exxon-Mobil and oil interests.

At their event in Copenhagen, a group of clean energy activists disrupted their meeting. In attendance was Lord Christopher Monckton, one of the most visible and outspoken voices against climate change science, who proceeded to call the protesters "Hitler Youth."

So who is Lord Christopher Mockton? "Mother Jones" describes him as a "self-described former special adviser to Margaret Thatcher on matters ranging from hydrogeology to epidemiology [who] has more recently devoted himself to climatology." The book "Climate Cover Up" notes, however, that he has no background in science whatsoever, and he's studied only classics and journalism. He shows up at events to make his global warming-denying case at the behest of groups funded by dirty energy interests such as Friends of America and The Heartland Institute.

Despite the fact that he no scientific training, he's been called upon twice by Republicans in Congress to testify before subcommittees as a climate "expert" -- you can read his statement to the Ways and Means Committee here.

Global warming is not the first topic that Monckton has taken extreme positions on. He created an uproar in his 1987 article for The American Spectator when he wrote, "There is only one way to stop AIDS. That is to screen the entire population regularly and to quarantine all carriers of the disease for life. Every member of the population should be blood-tested every month ... all those found to be infected with the virus, even if only as carriers, should be isolated compulsorily, immediately, and permanently." This would have included 1.5-3 million Americans at the time.

As a vocal leader of the climate change-denying movement, he is currently in Copenhagen calling young environmentally-minded people who are advocating for clean energy jobs, "Hitler Youth." Watch this video where he further talks to clean energy advocates and refuses to shake hands with a young man he calls "Hitler Youth" who's grandparents fled Europe to escape the Nazis.

WATCH:

HuffPost Blogger Brendan DeMille caught up with Lord Monckton to ask him to further explain his Hitler youth comment. He justifies the comment by saying, "The number of people being killed by this misplaced belief in climate change is if anything greater than the number of people killed by Hitler." He also states that coal and oil are "just as clean" as any alternative energy out there.

I listened to a tape Of Lord Monckton speaking, who has a degree in journalism by the way and no scientific training, and in the first few minutes of his talk he acknowledged that co2 is a greenhouse gas and that the adding of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere leads to warmer temperatures. What else is there? He admitted the whole scientififc understanding of climate change in his opening remarks. I do not even see why then he calls himself a skeptic. The rest of the talk was devoted to slandering the IPCC, which I did not give much of a hearing..

The Tobacco Industry created a similar "debate" around the detrimental effects of smoking. Follow the money. The oil companies are financing the deniers.

Numerous governments are financing the alarmists. Governments are investing far more on this than corporations.

What is your basis for that? Govts have a lot to gain by taxation. In the short term.

Tobacco is to smoking as Big Oil is to global warming.

Moncton is right.

Thatcher used him as a science adviser and he had no science background at all. That speaks volumes about the state of our world today.

Lord Monckton is a nut and pretty much emblematic of the whole denier movement! All of them are in the service of Big Oil!

It would be so ironic and unfair if someone pointed out that Lord Monckton resembles a bug-eyed not- see as might have been played by Peter Lorre.

I dont think he should call them hitler youth, although they certainly behaved like brainwashed maiancs. However i also dont think the media should call sceptics like him "deniars" It is offensive and intended to compare having a different opinion with denying the holocaust of jews. The term deniar should not be used.

Except you and this Monckton person (whoever he is) has the analogy exactly backwards.

People who bring up H in non-H situations should get stripped of pundit/political rights and privileges.

Is there a link between dishonest hyperbole and buggy eyes? If there is, this guy is stage four.

That last video was awesome. The guy with the camera seemed to have is mined jostled a bit. Monckton makes some really great points and I think there still is a need for a greater debate. The major scientists/eugenicists that pushed global cooling in the 1970s are now pushing global warming. John P Holdren is a perfect example.

Yes, yes, Beck the Clown has mention Holdren before but I knew about Holdren long before Beck pretended to be the first person to "expose" Obama's so-called science czar.

Indeed, there is a need for a greater debate, IF you can find a single CREDIBLE CLIMATE SCIENTIST who believes that climate change is not a fact.

You can not.

There is a need for greater debate IF you can find a CLIMATE SCIENTIST who isn't convinced that the increase in Global average temperature isn't the result of human activity in the industrial age.

There are perhaps a couple.

There is a need for greater debate IF there is a negative side to CLEAN ENERGY and reducing dependency on Fossil Fuels, that has not been made evident.

There is none!

You'd be entirely correct were it not for the fact that you're entirely WRONG.

There was NEVER widespread scientific support for the thought of global cooling in the 70s, there were a COUPLE of scientists who mentioned it once or twice, and a LARGE number of media outlets who said that they supported it...
08:46 PM on 12/13/2009
Couple of scientists? They were teaching it in schools, they also said the same thing back then, everyone agrees etc. ect., BS back then and BS now.

People who can't define what infrared is probably shouldn't be trying to making any comments on global warming, other than they don't understand what is going on. But here they go, all mobbed up in a pitchfork attack on science and scientists launched by college dropouts like Limbaugh and Beck, spokespeople for the oil interests of the world. Limbaugh and Beck do more for the transfer of wealth to Saudi Arabia, Libya, and Venezuela then their supporters ever seem to be able to understand.
