George Stephanopoulos Begins "GMA" Career With Hint To Program's Hard-News Shift

NEW YORK — George Stephanopoulos began tackling an early shift Monday in his new job co-hosting ABC's "Good Morning America."

Robin Roberts termed it "the dawn of a new day" as she welcomed Stephanopoulos beside her at the "GMA" anchor desk.

He began the program in strong form with a lengthy segment on President Barack Obama's tough calls to bankers to lend more money to homeowners and small businesses to help fix the economy.

In his interview with senior presidential adviser David Axelrod at the White House he also pressed for the current status of health-care legislation.

Then, bringing the exchange to a smooth conclusion, he was interrupted by Axelrod, who jokingly produced a surprise and announced that "your friends in the White House have chipped in to get you this gift: It's an alarm clock permanently set for 3:30 in the morning. So Robin, there's no excuse for him to be late for work."

Before his workday was over, Stephanopoulos had also interviewed a science reporter about bionic prosthetic fingers. He questioned talk show host Dr. Oz on tips for reducing heart-related holiday stress. (Cut down on booze, saturated fats and family drama.) And from the "GMA" technology contributor he learned ways to save money shopping online.

Stephanopoulos, 48, is making the jump to weekday mornings in New York after seven years based in Washington hosting the Sunday "This Week" political interview show.

At "Good Morning America" he's replacing Diane Sawyer, who next week will take over ABC's dinner-hour "World News" from retiring anchor Charles Gibson.

The appointment of Stephanopoulos, the network's chief political correspondent, was announced only Thursday. But his selection coincides with a mission by "GMA" to shift more toward harder news, particularly in the show's first 45 minutes, and add reports on health, consumer and legal issues,

Beyond that Stephanopoulos' challenge is even clearer: Bring more viewers to "GMA." NBC's rival morning show, "Today," recently marked 14 years of winning each week in the ratings, and its victory margin of 1.5 million viewers was its largest in more than three years, according to the Nielsen Co.

Chris Cuomo, the former "GMA" newsreader who had been thought to be a candidate for Sawyer's job, has left to become co-host of ABC's prime-time "20/20" newsmagazine with Elizabeth Vargas. Juju Chang replaces him as newsreader. Sam Champion remains weather anchor.

Stephanopoulos, a former White House aide in the administration of President Bill Clinton, moved to a journalism career at ABC News in 1997 as a news analyst for "This Week," where he became host in 2002. Temporarily doing double duty, he will stay at that show until his successor is named – a crucial personnel decision at a time when "This Week" has been drawing critical praise and threatening NBC's long-dominant "Meet the Press" in the ratings.

In the longer term, Stephanopoulos will continue as the network's chief political correspondent and report on politics for other ABC broadcasts. He will also be Sawyer's chief substitute on "World News," the network says.

I'm sure I am only one of many who are making their voices heard regarding the changes at GMA. I'm not a TV executive, but I am a loyal news follower. I have so, so many choices today for me to get the news. GMA was formerly the positive and "fun" source. I know George is new; however, I think I have already made up my mind to discontinue faithfully watching GMA.

I'm just really disappointed. Chris's humor & his chemistry with the others lightened up my day as I lost my biz & filed bankruptcy during this devastating recession. It wasn't so difficult to face the day when I could get the news and laugh (vs. cry like I did watching CNN ).

Sure, George will bring in-depth political reporting. I admire him for that, but I really don't think morning viewers want an overdose of seriousness, especially right now. Perhaps, if George had a sense of humor & was more at ease with the guests & viewers, I'd consider becoming a faithful viewer again.

I can't believe I started watching The Early Show on CBS this morning. I might as well just shut the TV off.

Sorry, ABC. I do hope you listen to your viewers. I am certain you don't want to move into The Early Show's spot at 3rd, hopefully that won't happen.

I wish you all the best.

If hard news means cooking segments....I'm uninterested.

Just the time I tuned in to see the show, of course it was the cooking segment.

It would be fun to tally up what percentage of people actually utilize cooking recipes from shows like these? 1-2%?

How bout investigative reporting on POSITIVE stories in the country.

This country needs a boost!

Make NEWS from a NEGATIVE to a POSITIVE!!!!

GS was stiff and awkward. I never thought of him as a media man....he would have been better to stay on Sunday at this point.

Many heads of companies and countries make dumb mistakes. So we forgive you, somewhat.

The show was awkward and seemed disjointed today, I had to change the channel after a while.

They also need to give George a booster seat or a taller chair, Robin towered over him and made him look like a little shrimp....too distracting!

I don't get it. We already had plenty of reasons to tune elsewhere on weekday mornings. Huh??

Mr. Stpehanopoulous is a great choice.
He may bring the ABC morning show an improved reputation for fairness.

I agree. I have stopped watching morning news programs because they have become "entertainment tonight " in the morning and I refuse to watch either the morning or the evening versions of this insulting fare. I think NBC is by far the worst of the worst which sadly may explain the high ratings--more dumbing down of America. I really hope George will bring some newsworthiness to the news and I will watch and give him a chance.

Not a bad start, but I could have done without the bionic fingers segment in the morning.

The whole show look and felt awkward. George looks like he would rather be somewhere else. Robbin towers him standing next to each other...just a weird dynamic. Missing Chris!

Hope this show will be more educational!

We sure need it!

The USA does not even rank within the top 25 countries in the world for education!

The fact that most Americans do not own a passport- cannot read a map- FAIL in Geography is not a secret.

We suck at Science and Math!

DEC 6, 2009- Sen. Wicker from Mississippi was asked on C-Span Washington Journal why his state ranked #50 for Healthcare!

You know what his answer was?

They FAIL at education! Ranked #50 for EDUCATION too!

MURDOCH/WSJ: Dumb it Down Mr. President!

We got STUPID to entertain!

Math and Science aren't the only subjects in school you know. There is also History, English, etc.
