Legionnaire's Disease Kills One, 300 Relocated From Epic Hotel In Miami

12/14/09 05:23 PM ET   AP

MIAMI — About 300 guests have been moved from a luxury Miami hotel after Legionnaires' disease struck at least three former guests since October.

Health officials said Monday that one former guest at the EPIC Hotel died at the end of October after leaving for a cruise. The other two guests fell ill in November.

Investigators found the hotel installed a water filter powerful enough to remove chlorine from its city-supplied water, encouraging bacterial growth.

Current guests were sent to nearby hotels Saturday to prevent potential contact with the bacterial disease that can be transmitted by contaminated water vapor.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates between 8,000 to 18,000 patients are hospitalized each year with the disease.

Wow! I've lived in Miami my entire life and have never heard of this place.

It's not the water filter...many countries don't chlorinate their water and are perfectly fine. It's the AC. I used to work as an engineer at the Mandarin in Miami, and we had to check the units daily. And they were cleaned at regular intervals. I mean super hyper cleaned. Someone may have been downwind from some unsanitary radiator steam. Who was the dche that implied this water filter hypothesis?

Now I see why you USED to work at the Mandarin.

Dear Headline Writer:

Here is an apparently rarely explored punctuation mark ; ....... it's called a semi-colon. It allows you to have two different thoughts in one sentence...... kind of like what you're trying to do... but you're coming off more like FOX than a credible news source.

Please take English 101 again.

Thank you.

A lot of writers loath the semi-colon by the way, many great writers. Had no problem with the headline here.

Did anyone else read this and think, "Please let this be Arthur Kade."

Am I a bad person for thinking that?

Is there a rhesus monkey with a PC writing your headlines?
03:04 PM on 12/14/2009
Okay, that is a really, really bad headline. I realize there's a space in there, but if you look at "1, 300" really quickly, you think "Damn, it killed 1,300 people!?"
03:06 PM on 12/14/2009
My take also.
06:48 PM on 12/14/2009
Definitely should have been a semicolon.

How can this dog in the manger Lieberman look at himself in the mirror without a lot of self loathing?
From the disaster of putting him on the Gore ticket to watching him at the side of McCain have we
learned nothing about this snake? There is no there there-he is out for Joe and will do whatever
it takes to make him a "player"-ugh-no scruples, no conscience, no nothing-say it ain't so Joe!
