The Power Of Giving: CNN Highlights Stories Of Generosity

CNN is celebrating the holiday season by highlighting stories of giving, generosity and hope. In the first installment of their "Giving in Focus: The 12 Days of Goodness" program, the tell the story of Cami Walker, a multiple sclerosis patient who was encouraged by a friend to give away 29 gifts in 29 days. After taking the suggestion, Walker's mood improved and the progression of her disease slowed. She since wrote a bestseller about the experience and runs the website 29gifts.org, which urges others to experience a month of giving.

CNN aims to show that altruism doesn't just help others, it helps oneself, an idea that scientific research seems to support. When people act magnanimously, these studies suggest, our levels of serenity and fulfillment increase. Our immune system also may grow stronger during the act of giving. Indeed, altruism has shown to be good for both body and mind.

In recent years, the 24-hour news network has actively encouraged giving and celebration of those who volunteer. Their annual CNN Heroes award ceremony highlights stories of triumph and generosity and rewards the finalists with money to continue their good work.

Come back to HuffPost Impact tomorrow for the start of our holiday series, "12 Families, 12 Cities, 12 Days of Christmas," highlighting the stories of Americans who have persevered to overcome incredible challenges.
