The anniversary of the birth of L. L. Zamenhof is celebrated in today's Google Logo, which has replaced the "L" in "Google" with a green flag.

Zamenhof, born December 15, 1859, was the creator of Esperanto, a constructed language designed to be used for international communication.

I was reading a science fiction novel recently that featured many people from different cultures stranded together. Fortunately, a couple of them spoke Esperanto and the language quickly spread, allowing communication between nearly all of the characters. Here's to Zamenhof!

Hurrah for Google! As an Esperanto speaker and proponent of the language as a real, useful tool for cross-cultural communication, I was enormously pleased at their provocative and unexpected choice today.

Esperanto vivas!
