The Mormon Song: "The Tonight Show" Sings To Orrin Hatch (VIDEO)

First Posted: 03/18/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 03:55 PM ET

With Utah Senator Orrin Hatch's rollicking "8 Days Of Hanukkah" tearing up the charts, Max Weinberg decided to return the favor and write a holiday song specific to Mormons. The only problem? Max (along with Andy and Conan) know nothing about Mormonism.

Set to the tune of "The Dreidel Song," the lyrics consist only of what the guys could muster up online: references to "Donny and Marie," "Big Love", Ms. Pac-Man (apparently Mormon related). Their cluelessness is forgiven when they welcome the Mormon Tapper-nacle Choir to bring the house down. We don't know if they're their real, but they tapped up a storm. Orrin would be proud.

the choir should have been comprised of one man and 6 underage girls, ALL wearing magic underwear, THEN it would be a song the mormons would TRULY understand!!

The Mormons were the impetus behind Prop 8 - not only bigots, but hypocrites as well.

Mormons are more than eager to share their tabernacle choir with the public at large, however only Mormons are allowed to witness their religious worship in the tabernacle; what are they hiding?

It doesn't matter what the Mormons try to hide. Unless they hide The Book of Mormon, aswell, their religion is a colossal fail. The entire religion rest on the testimony of one person, Joseph Smith. The Book of Mormon gave a detailed account of an American culture that could not have possibly existed in the Americas at any time. Joseph Smith may not have understood how different the pre-Columbian world was. In the book of Mormon, there are animals that are described that did not exist in pre-Colombian America. Even the honeybee, the very symbol of Mormonism did not exist in the Americas. The honey bee was introduced by Europeans. The Book of Mormon describes all sorts of animals that did not exist in the Americas. Horses were a European introduction. Cows, asses, and pigs were also. The people that existed in America were supposed to be Jews. To put it mildly they acted in very un-Jewish ways. For Chrissakes, the book had the Nephites, essentially Jews, handling pigs. Which would also have been impossible pre-Columbian. The tally of plants and animals that didn't exist in pre-Colombian America but are in the Book of Mormon is staggering.
04:26 PM on 12/17/2009
I'm not entirely sure about the other issues you brought up (I will find out), but with about five minutes of research I was able to find out that, while the European honeybee is not native to the Americas, the Mayans, Aztecs, and other ancient Mesoamericans cultivated a species of native honey bees called Apis Mellipona. I think it would be a good idea for you to do some research for yourself as well, bofore you post things like this. IMO.

Funny how many really savage comments about Mormons and others fly right by the censors.

Meanwhile, New Atheists, whose mission is to spread hate about anyone who disagrees with them, are criticism-free.

Sorry, I think you have Atheists mixed up with evangelical right-wing xtian teabaggers. Empirical facts and science seldom win when debating with faith.
11:48 AM on 12/16/2009
Yep. Everything's black and white. If you don't understand the context, it doesn't exist.

New Atheists (not all atheists) and Teabaggers are not the same, but I can understand the confusion: They're both fundamentalist evangelicals, and are EXACTLY as ignorant and intolerant.

I found the song quite funny, and I'm a Mormon. The humor mostly revolves around the fact that the population as a whole knows very little about Mormonism, and my encounters with the people on this site, and many other sites on the web, confirms this.

Actually, the more you learn about Mormonism, the more you learn what a huge crock it is. Mormons actually wish that outsiders knew less about it. Then they could say it was a mystery of the religion. Unfortunately for them, many of the outsiders are actually former Mormons themselves.

Dr. Simon Sotherton is an ex-Mormon Bishop. How much more inside would he need to be. Notwithstanding the hatchet job that the church has done on his reputation, they still can't intelligently refute the DNA evidence that led him away from the church. He either had to accept the realities of the science or the mythology of the church.

The claims that Joseph Smith made are either delusions or lies. Also, there is no evidence of the culture that is describes in the Book of Mormon. You have a testimony and history of a people that was dictated by an Angel of the Lord, yet not a shred of evidence in the real world. Thet say the Book of Mormon is another Testament of Jesus Christ. Exactly How? That's equivalent to saying that you have further proof of a crime and your proof turns out to be a story. For all the issues, that the Bible may have there is real world evidence of a culture and of actual persons mentioned in the book.

The Mark Of Cain

Mormons believe the biblical mark of Cain is of being of dark color eventhough the bible does not make any mention of it. And to become pure use must become pure as "white". They say its an adjective but all know it is the biggest racist religion in America. Its all in the Book of Mormon.
01:56 AM on 12/16/2009
As a Mormon, I find it offensive that you try to use rhetoric to invalidate our faith. Just because this is what be believe does not give you a right to call us racists. It's not about race, it's about skin pigmentation. ...you wouldn't understand.

rhetoric? Do you mean the standard of reason the Niocene creed applied to the early Christian church? condemning people for their skin pigmentation is not racist=? Sophism maybe the word you're looking for....

His religion is New Atheist. Their Golden Rule is "Everyone that disagrees with me is st*pid."

There's no need to be bothered by facts, history, context, or any of those other troublesome things in this religion. If he read it on some blowhard's New Atheist blog, it's OK!

So now you know.

Think of the anger and spleen every one of you would be posting if the Tonight Show had decided to do a satire revolving around the Haj.

What's that, you say? We're actually killing Muslims, not Mormons?

As of now, this is true; but the early Mormons were pretty aggressively prosecuted.

Watching huffpo decide to cover this kind of thing for grins bugs me, and no, I'm not Mormon, of Mormon extraction, nor even religious.
11:27 PM on 12/15/2009
You're projecting.

The whole point was making fun of a Mormon who wrote a Jewish song. What does this have to do with Muslims? It wasn't even mean spirited, but totally goofy. You need to lighten up.

Orrin Hatch is a U.S. Senator from Utah and a Mormon. You don't see it at all presumptuous that he would write a Hanukkah song. To parallel your comment, why doesn't he just write a song for Ramadan also.

BTW, why you are talking about how aggressively the Mormons were aggressively persecuted (not prosecuted), you should also read upon how they slaughtered 120 men, women, and children at Mountains Meadows. People who had done the Mormons. The Mormons offered them safe passage through Indian territory, and then slaughtered the adults and older children. Then they blamed the Indians for the slaughter. If you know anything about the Mormons you know that this dastardly deed was ordered by their "Prophet," Brigham Young. The people who were slaughtered had done absolutely nothing to the Mormons. Before 9/11 and outside of the civil war, this was perhaps the worst slaughter committed on the U.S. mainland.
