Tiger Woods' Anthony Galea Connection: Doctor Under Investigation For Performance-Enhancing Drugs

NEW YORK — A Canadian doctor who has treated golfer Tiger Woods, swimmer Dara Torres and NFL players is suspected of providing athletes with performance-enhancing drugs, according to a newspaper report.

The New York Times reported on its Web site Monday night that Dr. Anthony Galea was found with human growth hormone and Actovegin, a drug extracted from calf's blood, in his bag at the U.S.-Canada border in late September. He was arrested Oct. 15 in Toronto by Canadian police.

Using, selling or importing Actovegin is illegal in the United States.

The FBI has opened an investigation based in part on medical records found on Galea's computer relating to several professional athletes, people briefed on the inquiry told the Times on condition of anonymity because they did not want to be identified discussing a continuing investigation.

The anonymous sources did not disclose the names of the athletes, and Galea told the newspaper "it would be impossible" for investigators to have found material linking his athletes to performance-enhancing drugs.

According to the newspaper, Galea has developed a blood-spinning technique – platelet-rich plasma therapy – to help speed post-surgery recovery.

Galea visited Woods' home in Florida at least four times in February and March, the newspaper reported, to provide that platelet therapy after his agents were concerned by his slow recovery from June 2008 knee surgery.

Asked about Woods' involvement with Galea, agent Mark Steinberg told the newspaper in an e-mail: "I would really ask that you guys don't write this? If Tiger is NOT implicate, and won't be, let's please give the kid a break."

Woods announced Friday he is taking an indefinite leave from golf to work on his marriage after allegations of infidelity surfaced in recent weeks.

A message was left by The Associated Press late Monday night seeking comment from Steinberg.

Torres told the newspaper Galea found a previously undiagnosed tear in her quad tendon.

"Excluding draining my knee, he has never treated me, but I did see his chiropractor who did soft-tissue work on my leg," she said in an e-mail to the Times. "That was the extent of my visit with him."

Her agent, Evan Morgenstein, told the AP that Torres was not available for comment Monday night.

Brian H. Greenspan, Galea's criminal defense attorney, said an investigation will vindicate his client.

"Dr. Galea was never engaged in any wrongdoing or any impropriety," Greenspan said. "Not only does he have a reputation that is impeccable, he is a person at the every top of his profession."

Galea, who acknowledged he has used human growth hormone himself for 10 years, told the newspaper he never gave any athletes HGH, which is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency. And Galea told the Times he has never combined HGH or Actovegin with his platelet treatments.

"All these athletes come see me in Canada cause I fix them, and I think people just assume that I'm giving them stuff," he told the newspaper. "They don't have to come to me to get HGH and steroids. You can walk into your local gym in New York and get HGH."

Galea is also being investigated by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for smuggling, advertising and selling unapproved drugs as well as criminal conspiracy, the Times reported.

Hey!
World!?
Uh, Tiger is a GOLFER, not a marriage-family counselor.

So he turns out to have feet of clay--So what?
He's a frikkin' athlete, fer chrissakes!

It is THE WORLD'S hangup that Tiger must be squeaky-clean perfect.

He's a GOLFER!!!
Sure, a GREAT GOLFER, maybe the Greatest.

But that is it.

Why oh why must we, as a society, INSIST on building MYTHS about stars
and being shattered when the famous, faulty humans don't measure up?

Infidelity is a destructive thing to his FAMILY, but it relates to Golf, NOT 1 BIT..

Now, the possibilty of steroids use is another matter altogether, since THAT reflects DIRECTLY on what he has reportedly achieved & what has actually made him famous.

Infidelity--Important to his family only (and nosey gossipers too).

Steroids--IMPORTANT FACTOR as to whether Tiger's ACHIEVEMENTS are legit, or not.

Steroiods are a biggie;Infidelity is no big deal, except to people who live on fantasy
because their own lives suck.

When an activity involves another person carrying your tools of the sprot, as in a cady, it is not a sport.

Calling golfers althetes is a long, long stretch.

Which perfomance are we talking here?
03:51 AM on 12/16/2009
Not condoning Woods admitted indiscretion- But I can not understand the mentality of many contributors here.
What actual facts- i.e. FACTS, have been established to date. A car accident, hospitalisation and his statement saying everything and nothing.
Sensational media reporting to increase sales. 5-15 minute fame seekers looking for any payout. The world and his sister climbing on a bandwagon to throw in curve-balls in a situation where the foundations stand in a quicksand of uncertainty.
Is it any wonder Woods and entourage are keeping a low profile.
Apart from being the ideal candidate- Mixed race leaning towards being African American, rich, successful sports star, married to a very pretty white foreigner, nobody has yet to convince me of the BS now being written. But bigotry and bias must prevail for any with an axe to grind .
Today we have drugs. Tomorrow will he be accused of abuse to the neighbours dog, cruelty to grass, plants and sand? Pathetic.
Let it go.
Many thanks though. At least you, the media and everything crawling out from under each rock are giving Tiger and me a good laugh.

The only bigotry is from those that blindly defend him and ignore how he could have exposed his wife and unborn kid to std/HIV ad thus death. But since she is a certain "type" and his kids are part they over look it and make him the victim.

If they got HIV and wonder if all this card playing would happen in this joke of a human beings defense.

tiger proved himself to be a liar and he is the only one to blame, for all the questioning about himself.

He was highly liked and when he got exposed people are not trusting of him. Thats what happens when a false image is exposed

Apparently this is a non-issue. Check out Countdown's number 1 story with Gerald Posner. Alas, no Worst Person in the World as KO is off.

Cheat on your marriage, cheat on your sport. Seems logical to me. Tiger lack morality. Period.

I did not say I can prove anything about him cheating on sports. I did say that it is logical that he would. He cheated on his sacred marital vows, so why would anyone be surprised if he cheated to make more money and to be more famous. I don't have a wish list from Santa. Santa is as real as the image that was created for Tiger Woods.

I'm thinking that there are alot of people out there that want to see Tiger Woods destroyed out of pure jealousy. There are millions of people who are adulterers. Many of the people villifying him right now have cheated, they just haven't been caught. This new scandle about his doctor is just more amunition they want to use against him. Good thing he can't go to prison for sex outside the marriage or he'd be in locked up awaiting trial without bail.

I watched a few episodes of the Jerry Springer show and realised what it was doing to me. I stopped because I could no longer watch that sort of behaviour and call it entertainment. I am starting to get the same feelings towards Huffpost. I loved this site and would forward links to friends and colleagues. Not anymore I am afraid.

AH went on this week and made a joke that Tiger's mistresses will soon outnumber his majors. I thought to myself.....have you bothered to vet any of these women? If not then why make such a comment in a serious and national forum like ABC's This week?

No one appears to want to set a standard of journalistic integrity. Let's get Tiger at whatever cost...even if we are destroying ourselves in the process. To this end I will need to review the amout of time I spend of Huffpost. I no longer read the political stuff as the sports stuff has left me very disappointed. There is still time to redeem yourself Huffpost. I doubt you really want the TMZ readership to be the main source of your site hits.

Let's wait for the facts. If the drug was administered legally, it's a non-story. People in sports have injuries & pain that need to be relieved.

Pure speculation. No substance.

Exactly what fanboys were saying a week or two ago about Woods' infidelity.
01:43 AM on 12/16/2009
OK, Nancy Grace.

Keep reaching if that makes you feel better.

Tiger's infidelity was no secret... not even to his wife.

You need Tiger to be brought down so you can feel better about yourself?

Yeah, you do.

We are now witnessing in real time what happens when an old established well monied organization comes under fire.
Tiger Woods has been talking about starting another Golf Tour that would rival and later compete with the PGA Tour. There is a good chance that the most popular player in the game could do irreparable damage to th PGA. If he thought that these folks were going to sit idly by and watch this happen he was mistaken. So what you are witnessing is what happens when the big boys take the gloves off.
The main stream media (MSM) had been primed with certain information about Tigers' personal life before the blow-up at his home. The problem was that the MSM needed a catalyst in order to legally get that information out. The Enquirer I believe ran the story first (I won't say "broke" the story because it was hand delivered). The MSM catalyst story came with Tigers' accident outside his home. If you remember MSM wanted the local law enforcement to get them "in the door" and it almost worked but smarter heads (DA) prevailed . Remember the $160 ticket ?
Whoever is running this hit is going for the jugular. Tiger has obviously been under close private investigation. It appears that they've launched a multi-pronged attack. First, take him off his pedistal. Second, take away or diminish his financial resources. Third, villainize him (steroids)? Fourth, (taxes)?
I personally think that Tiger is in danger if they fail.
10:38 PM on 12/15/2009
Who keeps providing these shady doctors to so many athletes?

Something smells of rotten fish, and I don't mean one of Tiger's b!mbettes.
