Top YouTube Videos 2009: See What Made The List

SAN FRANCISCO — The year's biggest hits on the Internet's top video channel were anchored by an improbable singing sensation, a groggy boy nursing a sore mouth, a bride and groom dancing down the wedding aisle, supernatural heartthrobs and roller-skating babies.

The eclectic cast of characters starring in YouTube's most-watched videos of 2009 served as a reminder of the quirky appeal of a Web site that accepts about 20 hours of new video every minute.

The list released Wednesday marks the first time that YouTube has ranked its most-watched videos in any year since its 2005 inception.

YouTube's 2009 star was Susan Boyle, the frumpy Scottish woman who mesmerized the world with a heartwarming rendition of "I Dreamed A Dream" on a British talent show in April.

Boyle, now 48, ended up taking second place in that competition, but no one came close to outshining her on YouTube. Her "Britain's Got Talent" videos attracted more than 120 million views worldwide.

That was more than the next three most-watched videos combined, according to YouTube.

That has to be the most unflattering picture I have ever seen of Susan Boyle and can't understand why HP would use it. In reality she is a very pleasant looking woman.

There's a combination of great reasons why Susan Boyle's video is the top one of the year on YouTube: her obvious talent, long hidden from the world except in her little "collection of villages," her gutsy and humble demeanor while the panel of judges interviews her, the cuts between her beautifully soaring vocal performance the absolutely blown away judges, audience members and backstage crew. And then there's the perfection of her song choice, which seems to symbolize her long-buried dreams. I often watch it when I want some cheering. Susan Boyle has spoken to the dreams in all of us. You go, Susan!

I know she did not win first place on the show and the article said 2nd place actually. However she was 1st in most watched youtube video.

She got 2nd place on Britain's Got Talent. A dance troupe blew her away in the final round. She's first in YouTube views, possibly ever, and may have the biggest selling CD of the year, although 2/3rds will go to grandmothers who will think they make lovely coasters.
