Big Ten Expansion: 12 Teams? 14? 16? All In Play As Speculation Flies

Big Ten Expansion: 12 Teams? 14? 16? All In Play As Speculation Flies

It's already known the Big Ten is mulling expansion, but that expansion could be more significant than just a new team or two.

The Chicago Tribune's Teddy Greenstein reported that the conference is keeping an open mind:

Multiple Big Ten sources told the Tribune Wednesday that 14 teams, even 16, could be in play as it relates to the Big Ten's potential expansion. "Anything is possible," one source said, beyond the conventional wisdom of simply adding a 12th school.

The Tribune speculates the following schools are expected to be under close consideration for the expansion: Missouri, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse, Notre Dame.

Several officials connected to the Big Ten said earlier this week that it is exploring options to expand in the next 12 to 18 months. It's thought that the conference is looking to come up with an even number of members (currently at 11 football teams) so that it could have a conference title game.
