LOS ANGELES — Brittany Murphy, the actress who got her start in the sleeper hit "Clueless" and rose to stardom in "8 Mile" before her movie roles declined in recent years, died Sunday in Los Angeles of what appeared to be natural causes, a Los Angeles County coroner's official said. She was 32.

Murphy was pronounced dead at 10:04 a.m. at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Sally Stewart said.

Murphy was transported to the hospital after the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a call at 8 a.m. at the home she shared with her husband, British screenwriter Simon Monjack, in the Hollywood Hills.

Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said Murphy apparently collapsed in the bathroom, and authorities were looking into her medical history.

An official cause of death may not be determined for some time, since toxicology tests will be required, but "it appears to be natural," Winter said. He said an autopsy was planned for Monday or Tuesday.

Winter said Murphy's family was cooperating with the coroner's investigation. Funeral arrangements have not been announced, he said.

Los Angeles police have opened an investigation into Murphy's death, Officer Norma Eisenman said. Detectives and coroner's officials were at Murphy and Monjack's home Sunday afternoon but did not talk to reporters. Paparazzi were camped outside the multistory home, located above the Sunset Strip.

Messages left for Murphy's manager and agent by The Associated Press were not immediately returned.

Neighbor Clare Staples said she saw firefighters working to resuscitate the actress Sunday morning. She said Murphy was on a stretcher and "looked as though she was dead at the scene."

Murphy's husband, wearing pajama bottoms and no shoes, appeared "dazed" as firefighters tried to save her, Staples said. "It's just tragic," she added.

TMZ.com first reported Murphy's death Sunday morning.

Murphy's father, Angelo Bertolotti, said he learned of her death from his son, the actress's brother, and was stunned.

"She was just an absolute doll since she was born," Bertolotti said from his Branford, Fla., home. "Her personality was always outward. Everybody loved her – people that made movies with her, people on a cruise – they all loved her. She was just a regular gal."

He said he hadn't heard much about the circumstances of Murphy's death. Bertolotti divorced her mother when Murphy was young and hadn't seen Murphy in the past few years. He said he used to be in the mob and served prison time on federal drug charges.

"She was just talented," Bertolotti said. "And I loved her very much."

Meanwhile, Murphy's publicist, Nicole Perna, said in a statement: "In this time of sadness, the family thanks you for your love and support. It is their wish that you respect their privacy."

Born Nov. 10, 1977, in Atlanta, Murphy grew up in New Jersey and later moved with her mother to Los Angeles to pursue acting.

Her career started in the early 1990s with small roles in television series, commercials and movies. She is best known for parts in "Girl, Interrupted," "Clueless" and "8 Mile."

Her on-screen work had lessened of late, but Murphy's voice gave life to numerous animated characters, including Luanne Platter on more than 200 episodes of Fox's "King of the Hill" and Gloria the penguin in the 2006 feature "Happy Feet."

She is due to appear in Sylvester Stallone's upcoming film, "The Expendables," set for release next year.

Her role in "8 Mile" led to more recognition, Murphy told AP in 2003. "That changed a lot," she said. "That was the difference between people knowing my first and last name as opposed to not."

Murphy credited her mother, Sharon, with being a key to her success.

"When I asked my mom to move to California, she sold everything and moved out here for me," Murphy said. "I was really grateful to have grown up in an environment that was conducive to creating and didn't stifle any of that. She always believed in me."

She dated Ashton Kutcher, who costarred with Murphy in 2003's romantic comedy "Just Married."

Kutcher sent a message on Twitter Sunday morning about Murphy's death: "2day the world lost a little piece of sunshine," Kutcher wrote. "My deepest condolences go out 2 Brittany's family, her husband, & her amazing mother Sharon."

This was very sad indeed. Perhaps there was too much speculation in this case, considering the mother is backing up the the husband on the topic of drug use. If it were just a case of a heart problem, that can happen to anyone. Still, without any speculating, I would say that a man should take at least as much pride in himself as he takes in his wife. It's never too late to begin.

To JL-Sosa:

One iota more of heroin does not kill you. Heroin has an LD50 ratio similar to alcohol. If you were to shoot beer into your vein then it was suddenly replaced with everclear, you would die from an OD, unintentionally. As for your comments around stimulants. Air force pilots do not stay up for weeks on end. Neither do people taking Ritalin. But there are differences in how they are administered/taken, and differences in quality control, etc. Take methamphetamine cross-culturally, and it looks very different, but in my experience (which is not expansive) I haven't met too many people with the cannabis elitism angle who know how to look at any nation besides the Netherlands.

Your contribution to prohibition is duly noted, and the underpinnings of it undermine your own regulation agenda for cannabis. Chemical elitism is still elitism, and hatred or distrust of liberty is the same no matter which chemical you prefer over the others, and justification for prohibition for any substance, justifies prohibition. It's ludicrous, but you argue for it. You're not paying attention to how human beings actually work, it's never one thing, but a mix of set, setting, personal history and events.

Gun = any device using a tube as a transport for projectiles.
Firearm = gun using gas released from fire-based explosion

That's why BB guns are not defined as a firearm by anyone. Except, evidently, you. Or "Laser Firearm" for that matter. Or pneumatic nail "firearm."

We are a nation the operates in a daily drug daze. THE AVERAGE number of prescription drugs works out ot about 13 PER PERSON IN USA.. and that does not even touch the "illegal" drugs. We have all seen homes where the "drug drawer(s) resemble some sort of pharacy. It would NOT Be surprising if she had accidentally OD's.

Now days ads push us to pile drugs upon drugs, "just take the ///// Pill, you will feel better, loose weight, great sex, etc. You name it and the pill will do it.. 13 PER PERSON average in USA and 10 to 1 odds most NEVER took the time to look up their upper/downers etc on the net as to what they really do, and how they react. Even Doc's are fed up with patients coming in and naming the drugs they want via ad they saw. so let's all pop another pill and feel, look, act etc better, as that is the new USA.

Few things shock me but I was surprised to hear of Brittany's passing, she had so much ahead of her in her career, she was a rising star. I send my condolences to her family, husband, friends and those who know her. She will be missed.

Keep in mind that accidental overdoses of prescribed medications (especially prescribed pain killers) kill far more people in America every year than illicit drugs. Yet whenever someone in show business meets an untimely end the immediate speculation is illicit drugs rather than an accidental misuse of prescriptions or a natural disease process.

Until the death stories on the internet, I never connected the sunken-eyed synthetic actress of later films with the vibrant, appealing actress who played Tai in "Clueless". They've been doing this to actresses since before Judy Garland. "They" being the industry, the media, even the public. Will it ever change?

I never made that connection either. My daughter and I loved her in "Clueless". What a shame.

So beautiful and full of life in Cluless. Also-I beleive an underrated actress-as her roles in Girl Interrupted and Dont Say A word were excelent! By all accounts she was a sweet and gentle soul who deserved better.Whats up with her husband-kind of shady & creepy and definitely not in her league.Rest in Peace Britanny-only solace is knowing youre in a far better place!!

A Russian society blogger/journalist reported Brittany attending a private party in Moscow hours before her death (just about in time to get back to LA, if she used a chartered jet). I sincerely doubt it, but I wonder if any sources in the US had something to say about this information.

Can we dissect her character now like we've done MJ. Is that OK, or do we have to all show sympathy because of political correctness and r@cial sensitivity?

I wasn't a fan, but it's a tragedy whenever someone abuses dangerous substances and feels compelled to live up to an unrealistic image in the illusory world of entertainment.

The human body can take but so much.

R.I.P., Brittany

very very sad to hear. I wouldn't be sleeping on Egyptian cotton sheets if not for Uptown Girls. And Clueless would not be the same without her... such a loss.
