Diane Sawyer Kicks Off "World News" Tenure With Ahmadinejad Interview

Diane Sawyer is making a big splash for her debut on ABC's "World News."

Sawyer had a week between her final "Good Morning America" episode and her first night on "World News" — and she wasn't taking it easy.

The news anchor traveled to Copenhagen to interview Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Ahmadinejad told Sawyer that a recently-uncovered secret document detailing Iran's nuclear plans are nothing more than "fabricated papers issued by the American government."

Sawyer returned to "GMA" to preview the interview and show the below segment, in which Ahmadinjead addresses the American hikers detained in Iran.

The Los Angeles Times' Matea Gold says the Ahmadinejad interview offers a hint into the kind of program Sawyer will anchor.

...[With] the Ahmadinejad interview, her second with the Iranian leader, Sawyer made clear that she plans to continue to pursue the kind of high-impact "gets" that have been her calling card.

Whether her competitive zeal will change the program's fortunes remains an open question.
Their full interview airs Monday night on "World News with Diane Sawyer" on ABC.
