'Skid Row's Largest Christmas Toy Party' Attended By 10,000 Kids

More than 10,000 children from downtown Los Angeles and nearby neighborhoods showed up at the Fred Jordan Mission on Sunday for its 32nd annual food and toy giveaway, The Los Angeles Times reports.

Dubbed "skid row's largest Christmas toy party," the event was made possible by the efforts of more than 450 volunteers armed with bags brimming with goodies such as Legos, skateboards and Barbie dolls.

Families were entertained by the Walt Disney Co.'s Mickey and Minnie, Santa and Mrs. Claus and also received hygiene kits, clothing and food packages. The long-standing mission has been a mainstay of skid row for 66 years.

Nearby, the LA Sports Arena hosted 7,000 children and their families with "Christmas In The City," where several thousand bikes and toys were given away. This was an effort from the Dream Center, a nonprofit that assists the homeless, abandoned youth, gang members and those struggling with drug and alcohol addictions.
