Tim Jones, English Priest, Says Shoplifting Okay At Times

LONDON — For a priest in northern England, the commandment that dictates "thou shalt not steal" isn't exactly written in stone.

The Rev. Tim Jones caused an uproar by telling his congregation that it is sometimes acceptable for desperate people to shoplift – as long as they do it at large national chain stores, rather than small, family businesses.

Jones' Robin Hood-like sermon drew rebukes Tuesday from fellow clergy, shop owners and police.

From his pulpit at the Church of St. Lawrence in York, about 220 miles (355 kilometers) north of London, Jones said in his sermon Sunday that shoplifting can be justified if a person in real need is not greedy and does not take more than he or she really needs to get by.

The remarks drew a summons from Archdeacon Richard Seed, who said on his Web site that the church rejects the view that shoplifting can be acceptable.

"The Church of England does not advise anyone to shoplift, or break the law in any way," he said.

"Father Tim Jones is raising important issues about the difficulties people face when benefits are not forthcoming, but shoplifting is not the way to overcome these difficulties. There are many organizations and charities working with people in need, and the Citizens' Advice Bureau is a good first place to call," Seed's statement said.

Eleanor Course, a spokeswoman for Seed, said the archdeacon wants to meet with Jones to discuss the "appropriateness" of his sermon.

"The point we are most concerned about is that shoplifting is simply not a blameless, victimless crime," she said. "We want to make clear that it simply doesn't help people. And the last thing a desperate person wants is to be caught for shoplifting, so we feel this advice is very unwise."

Jones told The Associated Press that he stands by his comments. He said he regretted only that the media is focusing on his view on shoplifting rather than the underlying problem he wanted to address.

"The point I'm making is that when we shut down every socially acceptable avenue for people in need, then the only avenue left is the socially unacceptable one," he said, adding that people are often released from prison without any means of support, leading them back into crime.

"What I'm against is the way society has become ever more comfortable with the people at the very bottom, and blinded to their needs," he said.

He said shoplifting could help people who are legally entitled to government welfare benefits but have the benefits delayed for bureaucratic reasons.

This approach was quickly rejected by members of the British Retail Consortium, a prominent trade organization trying to reduce theft.

"It's the job of our welfare system, which retailers support with the billions they pay each year in tax, to help vulnerable people," said spokesman Richard Dodd. "There are no excuses for stealing."

The North Yorkshire Police also condemned Jones' approach as counterproductive because people already in marginal conditions would find themselves in trouble with the law if they resorted to shoplifting.

"First and foremost, shoplifting is a criminal offense, and to justify this course of action under any circumstances is highly irresponsible," a police statement read. "Turning or returning to crime will only make matters worse, that is a guarantee."

People in need should turn to charitable organizations and government agencies for help, rather than take matters into their own hands, the police said.

"To do this would make the downward spiral even more rapid, both on an individual basis and on society as a whole," the statement said.

I realize this has probably already been mentioned, but apparently this man of "the cloth" has forgotten the 8th commandment touted by his religion?

So, is it ok to ignore their other 9 commandments under certain circumstances also?

Another fine example of why organized religion is a crock.

I'm sure if the good reverend advocated stealing from Wall Street, the posters here would go ballistic and demand that he be crucified.

Whose oil are we stealing in the Middle East? Whose resources? Whose sustenance? Whose lives?

Who controls the mindset and the morals that justifies these atrocities? These blasphemies against the Spirit? Figure that out and you will know who would send a man to prison for stealing bread to feed his starving family and what "moral authorities" who would support that.

In the time of British occupation and oppression, Gandhi carried salt to the sea with a hoard of followers. Doing so was unlawful. Gandhi recognized there is a higher authority than the law. When the Spirit and the Law are in opposition the spiritual will follow the Spirit and the denizens of the Law will follow the Law.

"If you will have the Law save you, you will have Moses and the Law as your savior. For those who would follow the Spirit, you will have the Son of Man."

Father Tim making them nervous, eh? Novelist Victor Hugo did the same thing. His book "Les Miserables" was banned by the Church. No one wants to address the theft of merchants, bankers and capitalists. Before we finally got legislation against it, when hurricanes hit the American Gulf Coast, gas stations were gouging refugees on the high way. Oil companies create false shortages, ENRON created a phony electrical shortage and gouged California citizens for all they were worth. Bush and Cheney refused to intervene in the doin's of "Kenny Baby." I'm convinced Ken Lay is alive and well somewhere on an island paradise. He was quickly cremated without an autopsy. YOU GO, TIM!!!!

In fact, in a belated response to the Church's authoritarian fit which lasted for generations in response to Victor Hugo's Les Miserables, Pope John XXIII announced that the "church" IS the people and belongs to the people. The next day, according to a friend of mine who was attending the Gregorian's American School at the time, the huge Vatican plaza before St. Peter's filled up with poor families carrying suitcases and everything else they owned ready to move in. The Curia quietly stepped in.

As with any profession, some people should not be in the ministry. This guy is certainly one of them. Go find another line of work.

Which ministry? The Pharisee, Sadducee, Zealot or Essene? The religion of corporatism and consumerism has run it's course. The false prophets of Mammon and fundamentalist Zealotry are set aflame in their own greed and hypocrisy. Long live the people!

There's a wonderful anecdote about Winston Churchill and the propositioning of a nose-in-the-air socialite in London which I believe would illustrate the idea you're offering.

Churchill asked her to spend the night with him, and the woman turned him down with a cold, "Absolutely not! I am far above doing anything like that!"

Churchill propositioned again, asking her if she would consider sleeping with him for favors or money, and again she declined. "Madame," he finally offered, "Would you consider it if I offered you a million pounds for merely a single night's enjoyment?"

She relented, of course. At which point, Churchill sprung the trap and said, "Fine, it's a done deal! I will give you ten pounds for you to join me in bed this evening!"

The woman was aghast and said indignantly, "Mr. Churchill! What kind of woman do you think I am??".... to which he replied, "We've already established that. Now we're just haggling for price."

Stealing is stealing. What a person is stealing is only a detail.

You totally missed the point. It's a matter of survival and the social responsibility we have to the poor as our brother's keeper. Materialism has blinded the eyes and darkened the soul.

I've posted this before on this thread: If it were about actual survival, I would steal FOR the poor. Unfortunately, it's rarely about actual survival... It's usually about a perceived need/desire of some sort.

Materialism has blinded the eyes and darkened the soul? Absolutely. I am in complete agreement with that. But it has also done that to the poor -- those who convince themselves they are entitled to steal ANYTHING OTHER THAN BASIC FOOD NECESSITIES in order to ease their suffering.

I have enormous compassion and sympathy for the poor. They break my heart.

But stealing is...still... stealing.

It is this type of mentality that permeates government not the bible. If the government can justify mismanagement of money through misuse of taxes and taking bribes (through "lobbyists") then the general populate begins thinking they can do the same.
