DENVER — Actor Charlie Sheen and his wife Brooke want to reconcile, their lawyers said Wednesday, even though she told police he put a knife to her throat and threatened to kill her less than a week ago.

"They're very much in love. They want to try to work it out and want to have the best shot at doing that," Brooke Sheen's attorney, Yale Galanter, told The Associated Press.

Charlie Sheen's attorney, Richard Cummins, confirmed his client wants to reconcile. Cummins filed a court motion Wednesday asking a judge to dismiss a restraining order that prevents the couple from having contact.

The couple's desire to reconcile was first reported by TMZ.com.

Charlie Sheen, 44, was arrested on Christmas Day in Aspen, where the couple was on vacation. Brooke Sheen, 32, told police he threatened her during an argument that started when she said she wanted a divorce.

Charlie Sheen told police the couple slapped each other and that he snapped two pairs of her eyeglasses in front of her, but he denied threatening her with a knife.

He faces charges of felony menacing, domestic violence, second-degree assault and criminal mischief and is free on $8,500 bond. A hearing is scheduled for Feb. 8 in Aspen.

Galanter said Wednesday that Brooke Sheen is standing by the account she gave police, but he said she didn't understand at the time that it would lead to her husband's arrest.

"Wives think the cops are going to break something up and they don't realize the husband is going to be taken to jail," Galanter said.

"I will tell you that both parties want to attempt to work this out. Whatever was said and whatever happened, I'm chalking it up as one really bad night," Galanter said.

An arrest affidavit quoted Brooke Sheen as saying her husband pinned her on a bed, held a knife to her throat and told her, "You better be in fear. If you tell anybody, I'll kill you. Your mother's money means nothing, I have ex-police I can hire who know how to get the job done and they won't leave any trace."

In an audio recording of a 911 call, a woman who identifies herself as Brooke tells the dispatcher that Charlie Sheen threatened her with a knife and added, "I thought I was gonna die for one hour."

She said at least five times during the four-minute call that she wanted to file a report. "It's happened before," she said, according to the affidavit.

Galanter said Brooke Sheen hired him "because she is a witness against her husband and she wants him to continue being her husband."

He called it "a very interesting legal conundrum.... Events occurred. She gave a sworn statement to a law enforcement officer. She wants to work on her marriage and she wants to honor her legal obligations."

Asked if she would testify against her husband, Galanter said, "It's not going to come down to that." He declined to elaborate.

Galanter also declined to comment on Charlie Sheen's statement to police that his wife abuses alcohol.

Galanter said Brooke Sheen was still in Aspen on Wednesday with the couple's twin boys, who were born in March. Galanter said he was not concerned that social services might intervene out of concern for the children.

"These kids are in probably the most loving, nurturing, wholesome, healthy environment I have ever seen," he said, describing their mother as "doting."

Social services officials in Aspen said state law forbids them from speaking publicly about a case.

Cummins said he did not know Charlie Sheen's whereabouts.

Charlie Sheen stars in CBS' "Two and a Half Men" and Brooke Sheen is a real estate investor. The couple married in May 2008.

Galanter said he's optimistic about the future of the couple's relationship.

"They are madly in love with one another, they have beautiful babies together and there's no reason they shouldn't be able to have a long, fruitful, healthy life with one another," he said.

No lawyer needs to be involved in any effort to reconcile a marriage. IMHO, when there is violence in a relationship and the two parties want, for whatever their reasons are, to try to reconcile they should seek counseling both separately and apart. Nine times out of 10 this is not an isolated incident for one or both of them. Alcohol abuse is often a big factor for one or both of the people involved. Very often there is a history of violence in their family or their own personal relationships with other people. Anger issues, misogyny, low self-esteem, patriarchal/autocratic communications styles, and last but not least mental health problems can be definite factors that contribute to the problems and the escalation to violence acts. Can people work through even the worst of these problems....sometimes 'yes' and sometimes 'no'. But people to have the right to try without the divorce court and BEFORE things get to the point of involving an attorney. We live in a very litigious society and too much in our lives is reduced to how much money can I get from this situation. Everything is NOT about MONEY! Lawyers in these situations is all about the M O N E Y and not the M A R R I A G E!

Women: You can't live with them and you can't use their bones for soup. It's a cold, cruel world in that regard.

I find it interesting that people were more up in arms over Tiger Wood's infidelities than Charlie Sheen holding a knife to his wife's throat? That's far more dangerous, and it breaks a law. Nothing Tiger did was unlawful, yet he's been far more castigated. What's up with that? If Tiger had held a knife to his wife's throat, people would be hunting him with dogs and torches.

Ladies, if you had to make a choice, who would you be more receptive to reconciling with? A husband who cheated on you with a lot fo women, or a husband who held a knife to your throat, and threatened to kill you?

Brooke was DRUNK as a skunk AKA impaired, what really happened is the question? Who was minding those babies?

I mean honestly...how many times does this guy have to get in trouble for people to start playing hard ball with this guy? I'm not even gonna stress the double standards but does he actually have to kill a spouse for people to say "okay you know what this is ridiculous". It should have already been deemed ridiculous after the 2nd or 3rd time

umm German news report that he offered hush money and their reports turn out to be right, ususally. That should explain why she wants to reconcile. Maybe money talks in this relationship.

Presuming for the sake of discussion that the initial reports were correct regarding the knife and threat, this is still no great surprise. Domestic violence occurs in a cycle, typically ever escalating. Right now, they would be in the honeymoon recovery period of "oh baby, I'm so sorry, take these flowers, I love you, it will never happen again." Enter magical thinking "he said it will never happen again and I really don't want a divorce, I just want the abuse to stop, and it will because he promised, so now everything will be fine." And the cycle starts again, slowly winding up until the next episode of violence, which is likely to surpass the last. All the while, outsiders unfamiliar with domestic violence watch with apalled shock, not having any understanding of why a woman allows this to continue.

No, this doesn't just happen in celebrity relationships. It happens every day, in all socio-economic groups, with female and male victims and perpetrators. The average domestic violence victim will try to leave the perpetrator an average of seven or eight times before finally doing so. The motivations involved are fairly complex and layered, it is not just a matter of "stupidity" or "foolishness."

For the sake of the children and all involved, I sincerely hope both partners in this dysfunctional relationship get counseling before this volatile situation becomes something truly tragic.

Ok, where is the outrage? Just 10 months ago everyone was all upset about Chris Brown hitting Rhianna. Charlie Sheen actually threatened to murder his wife with a knife. Someone please tell me what is the difference? How is she any different from Rhianna, she wants to go back?

I've seen plenty of critisism directed at Sheen, I think seeing pictures of Rhianna made it more real to everyone. Seeing a woman with her face all bruised and beaten, has an affect on people, more than hearing a drunken woman crying into the phone. I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying pictures are more powerful, and no it's not racist.

Charlie Sheen and wife are not so called role models to the younger generation. That is probably why.
12:41 AM on 01/01/2010
I call BS on that, its called double standard. A different set of rules applies to different people. Twenty year olds are not role models, they are not even old enough to know their own feelings.

LOL - this reminds me of a time when I was just shacking up with my ex-wife before we ever married. To make a long story short. She was really miffed at me. We were outside around dusk and being fairly loud. She was standing about 20 feet away and I had a neat stack of some 35 or 40 fire bricks left over from a job. She began chucking them at me one at a time. But being a most excellent 3rd baseman in my day, I was catching them and making a nice neat little stack with them once again. This made her angrier and louder with each throw.

So after it was all said and done, our friendly neighborhood police show up. I was in the family room and she was up in the kitchen. We were in the house and things were calm. I intercepted the police through the sliding glass door and they insisted upon coming in against my wishes. So one stayed with me while the other ventured up into the kitchen to insure that I hadn't killed my now ex, etc. He was up there for a few seconds and shouts, "She's got a knife!" The other cop ran to his aid of course followed by me. Anyway, I watched these two tackle and disarm her. With her yelling and screaming all the time. It was rather funny.

Anyway, if it would have been me with a knife, they would have just shot me. But being my ex was 5'1" and 100lbs, she wasn't at all intimidating even with a knife. So then I went on and married her and had two great kids and then I divorced that crazy person. What a ride that was.

He plays a drunk on TV, not in real life. Lets keep the two separated.

Sources say authorities gave both Charlie and Brooke blood alcohol tests. Brooke registered a .13 while Charlie registered a .04.

He was sober enough to drive in most states.

With Sheen's history of alcoholism and drug addiction, having an alcohol blood level of .04 is .04 too much. He's relapsed, and with his history, his substance abuse is likely to spiral out of control again. His anger issues already appear out of control.
