10 Industries That Will GAIN The Most Jobs In Next Decade

First Posted: 3/18/10   Updated: 5/25/11

Though Nobel laureate Paul Krugman called this decade "the big zero" -- as in zero wage growth, zero stock market growth, etc. -- it's probably safe to say that the last ten years weren't a complete wash.

Of course, we've seen the deterioration of certain industries and massive disruption in employment. But, in the next decade there will certainly be a corresponding expansion in some unexpected areas. Earlier this month, the Bureau of Labor Statistics forecast the industries in which it expects the most job growth over the next decade.

As demographics shift toward an older population and manufacturing jobs in particular dry up, the great bulk of the new jobs -- 96% of the increase in new employment -- are projected to be created by service industries such as health care services or business services. But there are still a few outliers.

Check out the list -- and vote for the ones you think have the most growth potential -- below:

#10 Full-service restaurants, +343,000

The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that jobs in the full-service restaurant industry will increase by 7.5% by 2018. The industry provided 4,598,000 jobs in 2008.

The alarming things indicated by the growth of employment in these particular industries is that the USA seems to be winding down and the private sector will be decimated. Another matter is the obesity epidemic is very apparent and well represented.

With all the minimum wage jobs leading the pack on growth industries, it is no wonder that winning the lotto is the number one way Americans feel they can get ahead in the future.

Capitalism is sin. Acts 4

Capitalism failed in 1929 and has been propped up by astronomical gov't subsidies since 1933. Russia in the 20th century was not real socialism, rather STATE-CAPITALISM where the state owns the means of production. REAL socialism is MONASTICISM.

Health care is the next bubble to burst as alternative medicine/antipsychiatry, which is evidence-based, has been gaining more and more credibility. Very little of ruling class medicine has ever been evidence-based since its origins in the Inquisition and the Witch Hunts in the 13th century under Pope Innocent III.

Capitalism in this country is not existed since at least 1913 when the Marxist plank of centralized banking ant credit, and the income tax, which gradually became the lever of class war, were enacted.
Regardless of the word games, central planning on a national scale does not work.

The socialist war-cry is, "we did not do enough"

You still don't get it. Real socialism, which is real Christianity, mandated by the bible and the saints, involves collective living in the cloisters of the convents and monasteries, and in NO WAY involves central banks or central planning. The Church existed as a network of communes for 250 years with no central banks or central plans. Those things are STATE-CAPITALISM, a gross misinterpretation of Marx from 100 years ago.

Of course, I have every intention of accelerating the bursting of the health care bubble in any way I can. It's about time this fraudulent pseudoscience is exposed for what it is: the INQUISITION. Currently, the medical system is the #1 killer of Americans, and has killed more of us in the past century than have been killed in all the wars in history combined.

Another bubble near bursting is soverign debt, owed by dozens of nation-states around the world, including the US.

This list is heavy on the healthcare jobs; how are we going to PAY for this? And, the #1 job is the type of USELESS money sucking "consulting" jobs that put us into this mess to begin with. What a load of excrement.

Whats the matter? Fear for your job security? Consultants often perform work that internal staff either cannot perform, or do not have time to perform. Used properly they will provide measured results in a finite amount of time.

A thing or two could be learned from this free market mechanism.

When our economy is in the IC ward nobody is going to be making much in the service jobs, except those that are on the winning side of swap and derivative bets - the vapor economy.

Have not read all the comments here, so I apologize if I repeat someone, and apologize for those who have spent time and money on education for work they are unable to find.... But I find it very unfortunate that people criticize jobs that may have much more of an impact on the comfort of our lives and happiness than other jobs. Maybe it is all wrong that some of the lowest paying jobs positively effect people more than some of the highest paying. No one seems to notice how people in these areas make our lives easier, may have a strong impact on our moods (satisfaction) and our health.

People seem less willing to 'pay' more for service and care these days...Maybe therein lies a problem for the future.

There are a great number of people in these 'industries' that consider themselves professional and have had a tremedous positive impact on those that they serve, but get little recognition for their efforts.
There are others who consider themselves 'below' this type of work, but need a job....Are those the ones we get the best service from?

If the 'values' and pay scales of different lines of work shifted....Maybe there would be academic degrees in "service' and a whole new field would open up. Yes, this might sound lame and ridiculous.....but how many memories do you have still fresh of bad service or rudeness...that even now sticks in the pit of your stomach?
10:57 AM on 12/31/2009
LOL Well I compare the U.S. to France in the years just before its Revolution, when the "rich/well-off" looked down on those who were providing services for them and treated them like dirt. We have the same situtation now. The gap between the "Have's" and "Have-nots" is huge and is growing wider daily.

Eventually the peons and serfs are going to get tired and there is going to be a new revolution and those at the top are going to find some very bad times heading their way.

Industries? What industries?

Industries consist of PRODUCING, MANUFACTURING companies!

Service is no industry, it's SERVICE!

Crp, all of the above!

We have to create the green jobs still by upping demand.

While green collar jobs will be excellent and necessary, the more important question is where are all the SKILLED green energy CAREERS? I am about to graduate from college in chemical engineering, and I cannot tell you how DIFFICULT it is for an entry-level bachelor's, master's or even PhD graduate to find a job as a skilled engineer in the green-tech industry. Experience plus extremely specific expertise in the field is required. How are we to gain experience in green-tech if the I can't get a job in the field in the first place? A caveat for all careers...

Computer design? Really? The only growth is in IT, and that population's only job is configuring the over-engineered operating systems we get suckered/blackmailed into upgrading to every year.
