Ephesians 2 8-10: Tim Tebow's Eye Black Bible Passage (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 03/18/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 04:05 PM ET

Tim Tebow regularly includes references to Bible passages in his eye black. During the SEC Championship game, he guided viewers to John 16:33. The week before, in his last home game as a Florida Gator, his eye blacks referenced Hebrews 12:1-2. Tonight, Tebow is playing the final game of his college career in the Sugar Bowl, and he has included one final message beneath his eyes.

Tebow's eye black says "EPH 2:8-10," a reference to the Epistle to the Ephesians. Ephesians 2:8-10 says:

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith -- and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God -- not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

I want to see religion and pro life after the first condom leak.
He is one of those "I want to thank Jesus" after a win.
If anyone noticed Jesus is not around after a loss.
Also whatever happen to ousting God from schools?
I thought that meant everybody.

I wonder if Tebow really knows how many quotes there are in the Bible that directly contradict the one he's decided he agrees with, and how many of those quotes came directly form Jesus, and not from one of the "letters"

How long will you "progressives" mock the religious faith that so many people hold dear?

I pray for the day that the AA community in particular will see you "progressives" for what you really are.

Matthew 6:1
Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

I think it is more a repudiation of the hypocrisy and the judgements that are aired in the name of their "religious faith".

well I guess we'll see just how good a quarterback God has decided Tim will be. Maybe he'll suck and tell us that God has a different "plan" for him. Win win, right?

I have no problem with Tim wearing his religion on his sleeve or even on his face. It is his right to do so in this country. But I wonder what the reaction would be if he were Muslim and did the same with quotations from the Qu'aran?
11:51 AM on 01/30/2010
There would be no article about it in the Huffington Post if it was a Muslim, because "progressives" in America only have a problem with Christianity.

and rightly so...

It's nice to see a guy who isn't afraid to put his beliefs out there. Say "Amen"!
Posting the notations on your face doesn't equate to praying in public.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances,
for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.

Terrelle Pryor, quarterback for THE ohio state, has Tebow beat. First game of this season he wrote on his eye patches: Michael Vick. Tebow may admire God, but Pryor admires a convicted felon.

Still freedom of speech either way, right?

...not really. We're a captive audience. Look for the NCAA to create a rule against pimping your religion or anything else on your person next season....unless of course he want's to get tattoos all over his grill...now THAT I would appreciate

Maybe he should sign with the CFL (Christian Football League).

Right in line with tossing a football around for a million dollar a year salary.

Doesn't all that sparkly silver ink defeat the purpose of eye black? He should take a black sharpie and write the verse on his nose.

Some general legitimate questions: Does eye black even help with stadium lights at night? How many baseball outfielders wear eye black in bright sunlight? Does black skin need eye black?

The black is to stop the light ANY light from reflecting off of your cheekbones and lower eyesocket and into the eye. And yes it does work. Magically so. You'd be surprised how much light reflects off of there and into your eyes.

The antiglare stickers used by many players (like Tebow here) are supposed to mimic traditional eye black, made from some combination of wax and soot, for purposes of reducing glare and increasing color contrast sensitivity, particularly in bright environments. I don't know whether the stickers actually work as well, though.

Black players' skin might reflect less of the visible light spectrum, but the glare largely results from light reflecting from natural skin oils and perspiration on the cheekbones. This is obviously an issue independent of skin color.

I am quite liberal and Jewish, so believe me, nothing Tebow says out loud or on his eye black has any impact on my religious leanings. And I think it's safe to say that we would not agree on many social/political issues. But of course he's not a politician or policy maker - he's a football player! - so his leanings don't affect me much. I personally just ignore him when he talks about JC and frankly, if it weren't for HP blowing up these pictures in such ginormous fashion I wouldn't even be able to read them or even know what they referenced. I haven't memorized the Bible and I don't care about it to Google it - so really, who's throwing this at me? (He had his helmet on most of the game anyway!)

But I just can't grasp what all the pure venom directed toward him is about. He truly is what he says/people say he is - a nice guy who loves his school, his team, his coaches, his fans, his family and yes - quelle horreur - his God. So what? How many of us spend hours working with prisoners, visiting hospitals and his spring break circumcising kids in the Fillipines. Does it matter that he does that on a mission? It might benefit some of us liberals to just get over the knee-jerk hatred to ANYONE religious - they might actually do some good (read Nicholas Kristof's Half the Sky for a more eloquent

"Quelle horreur?" You had to go french on us in a sports related story?! No one gives a hoot about his religion or sincerity. It is about football, an escape. Just play football and live your faith through examples off of the field and leave the facial billboards at home.

I am reminded of the Pharisees who prayed loudly in public places. It's sanctimonious - let his actions speak and leave the billboards at home.
