Snowbama: Obama Takes Daughters For A Hawaiian Shave Ice Treat (PHOTOS)

Huffington Post/AP   First Posted: 03/18/10 06:12 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 04:05 PM ET

KAILUA, Hawaii -- President Barack Obama has kept a low profile during his Hawaiian vacation, but the public got a glimpse of the first family when he took his daughters and friends for a treat on Friday. The group enjoyed a local treat of ice shavings and flavored syrup, while the President joshed with his friends about college football.

Obama and about 20 people drove to a shave ice store the president has visited during past trips to Hawaii. He ordered a flavor combination of lemon-lime, cherry and passion-guava syrups.

"It's the Snowbama," Obama said, noting that the store lists the combination on its menu.

He chose not to add sweet azuki red beans or ice cream, as some people do in Hawaii.

"I like my shave ice straight, no frills," said a casual Obama, wearing a white T-shirt, khaki shorts and sandals.

About 100 people packed into a shopping center parking lot to catch a glimpse of the vacationing president and his girls, who have largely stayed out of public view while on the island of Oahu.

While waiting in line Obama teased a friend who rooted for Oregon. The Ducks lost to Ohio State in the Rose Bowl earlier in the day.

"He's heartbroken, so I'm buying him shave ice," Obama said.

The store - Island Snow - said on its Facebook page that the first daughters already had visited the store during this vacation.

First lady Michelle Obama was not seen with the group.

I don't agree with him on every issue, but it's still exciting to see him. I respect his intelligence and civility. Having smart people in the government sure is a nice refreshing change after Bush.

Not since Clinton and his infamous cigar have I felt so turned on by a President's oral propensities.

Forgive me. I digress.

This President is being held to new standards made specifically for him.

How dare he enjoy a vacation with his family? He should be permanently positioned at his desk and fed bread and water.

precisely right. Suddenly the wing nuts care about who pays for vacations. While Bush and Saint Ronnie were clearing brush all they could do was swoon at their maniless and how great they looked in cowboy boots.

It's a sickness called "racism"

Shave ice is a good daddy daughter thing. My girl and her dad do it when they are there. But it's even better when they put condensed milk on after the syrup. They do it in Barbados (snocones). It's awesome, but should only be done on vacation.

Ever think of changing your name to "MISinfocenter"?
And I know you'd much prefer pictures of Bush "clearing brush" on his top-of-the-line eco-ranch, while most Americans could only DREAM of living in such a place...and when he's done, maybe you can have a beer with him - beer he made YOU buy.

Well gosh by golly ain't that sweet. While Obama and his daughters living it up in Hawaii, 1/4 American kids and 1/8 adults are staying alive on food stamps. Mr. Entitlement ought to try working for a living in the US and instead of counting clouds on some exclusive beach in Hawaii.

Of course he should. He never works, just vacations.

What's up with the peace sign? You don't seem very peaceful to me. Is the president supposed to work 24/7 and never have any down time with his family? Is that your idea of how to solve the economic problem? How would that work exactly?

How about some respect for America's choice of president? Would it kill you? Would you lose anything by having some sympathy and understanding for the tremendous pressures he is under with everyone ragging on him constantly, not allowing him anything, even when he does good things? How is this supposed to help the president do his job? He's only a few years away from having paid off his own student loans. Do you really think he doesn't know about how Americans are struggling?

it's called shaved ice. Its been around forever. I lived in Hawaii as a kid in the late sixties and it was all the rage then. I still crave it a bit. Philly's water ice may be good but shaved ice is paradise is the real deal

I notice you had to put "in paradise" in there, Numskll...I'm sure the location enhances the flavor.
Anyway, since you've had the shaved ice and I haven't, I'll take your word for it until I get over there one day...
