Michelle Obama On 'Iron Chef America' (VIDEO): Use 'Anything From The White House Garden'

First Posted: 03/18/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 04:05 PM ET

The highly anticipated Iron Chef America "Super Chef Battle" finally took to the White House on Sunday night. Michelle Obama's hyped appearance, however, only clocked in at under two minutes of the two-hour cooking battle.

The First Lady, donning a challenge appropriate, carrot and green dress, dropped by to welcome the chefs and introduce the secret ingredient.

"My surprise today is that your secret ingredient is anything from the White House garden," Obama announced. "There is an abundance of just wonderful, seasonal vegetables and fruits. Take as much of it as you need."

With the point being to spread the word on Obama's campaign to promote organic, healthy eating for children, the challenge itself was never a big secret. Chefs Mario Batali, Bobby Flay and Emeril Lagasse do, however, look genuinely surprised by its open-endedness. Flay tries to get a little more direction, pressing Obama to hint at one ingredient he should not pass up on.

"Sweet potatoes. We are sweet potato lovers-- especially the President," Obama emphasized.

Thoroughly enjoyed the show; particularly seeing the beautiful White House Garden.

This past summer was cool and damp which led to a horrible harvest. Planted many heirloom seeds and plants which are not as disease resistant. (Yes, we have an organic garden.) Actually considered not investing in garden in Spring/Summer 2010, but after seeing all those beautiful vegetables ... decided to give it another year. It is absolutely satisfying being able to walk out back and pick veggies for lunch or dinner... the taste is unbelievable.

It's a good thing to have our First Lady promoting good eating habits ,,, another way to health reform in our country.

damn its some haters in the house. its vegetables and the promotion of eating healthy on a popular show.

FLOTUS looked great and Emeril was very happy to be there - he couldn't stop grinning.

i love it!

Some people just cant get past their own hate to get the message. I think they are called right wingers. Sad.

Look at that M!chelle put out those collard greens from the ground with one hand! Green Giant!

And I love the challenge: to make a delightful repas with lead-contaminated veggies from her garden. Wow, good luck with that.

What is your problem?
My parents always had an organic garden and my husband I have had an organic garden since we got married. We have even converted our front yard and parkway into organic gardens. We get lots of compliments for our red runner beans that provide shade and beauty to our front porch.
Do you have some very special sorce of produce? The majority of the vegtables and fruit grown in the US has some kind of pollution.

On some enchanting eveningI'd like to see the first lady do a TANGO - she's got the sexy Tina Turner carmel long legs. Yes sir. There's a lot of loving to be had in this White House - with ones wife that is.
06:29 PM on 01/05/2010
Tine would be offended to have her gorgeous legs compared to M!chelle's tree trunks.

Did you ask Tina Turner if she was insulted?
Michelle Obama is beautiful and it is an honor to have a smart, educated woman as our First Lady.

oh dear! that little bolero sweater (or thrown in the dryer by mistake) makes her look like an umbrella in that dress. you'd better check yourself missus.

It's not her fault, she thinks she's still 5 (she's taking the "young First Lady" title a little to the extreme).

It's amazing how people can find fault with

A) growing a vegetable garden
B) using it as a tool to educate children
C) giving the produce to the needy
D) The Frist Lady doing a cameo on a TV show that draws attention to eating healthy

And speaking of finding fault, since when is it a requirement of the First Lady to be at the level of fashion models in her looks and and the clothes she wears? The comments here are some of the meanest I've ever read about anyone. To live with hate like that and feel it is necessary to post such vile remarks is very sad. Some posters here need to step back and take personal inventory.

Jealousy drives poor behavior

Although I like the Obama's ... they are so, so, so overexposed in the media. Both Barack and MIchelle. Cooking shows, talk shows. Maybe they feel that if they are perceived to be "just one of us", then Americans will embrace them. Or, maybe they just like the celebrity status. But I don't think this is positive and it minimizes their "presidential" value to America.
03:24 AM on 01/06/2010
Sure...and the Bush Administration's numerous missteps (Katrina, the "lack of WMD" argument that began this whole quagmire we're in) demonstrated true Presidential value? Really?

Try again...
10:04 AM on 01/06/2010
I am not giving kuddos to Bush. Do we want to talk about Obama missteps in just one year? Your argument has nothing to do with my statement. Bush not reacting to Katrina has nothing to do with Obama and over exposure. If you want to make that point, I could say that Obama tends to go into hiding just when you need him visible. He tends to be visible when it doesn't matter and hides when it does.

If getting Mario Battali, Emeril LaGasse, and Bobby Flay to cook with ingredients from the White House garden encourages the slow food movement, it was worth the time and effort that went into putting this together.
