Mr. Bean Replaces Spanish PM On EU Website (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 03/18/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 04:05 PM ET

A website created for the start of the Spanish Presidency of the European Union has been hijacked by an unusual enemy - Mr Bean.

An image of the legendary British television personality, played by comedian Rowan Atkinson, was used by a hacker to replace Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriquez Zapatero's picture on the official Spanish website yesterday. (Scroll down for screengrab.)

Observers have noted that comparing the Spanish premier to the bumbling star has become a common way to criticize the government. Reuters reports:

A recent edition of leading newspaper El Pais printed a cartoon depicting Zapatero as Mr Bean above an article critical of the government's handling of the economy, in which unemployment has more than doubled to about 19 percent.

However, there is also the simple fact that they share some physical similarities. The Guardian believes it is simply the "way their eyebrows arch".

You can't deny the resemblance!

I only hope the Spanish PM's politics also resemble those of Rowan Atkinson's (Mr. Bean): " In June 2005, Atkinson led a coalition of the UK's most prominent actors and writers, including Nicholas Hytner, Stephen Fry and Ian McEwan, to the British Parliament in an attempt to force a review of the controversial Racial and Religious Hatred Bill — on the grounds that the bill would give religious groups a "weapon of disproportionate power" whose threat would engender a culture of self-censorship among artists.[13]"-Wikipedia
