NRCC Pushes Back Against Steele Over 2010 Pessimism, GOP Operatives Furious

Republican operatives are privately furious with RNC Chairman Michael Steele for predicting on Monday night that the GOP will not take over the House of Representatives in 2010.

One strategist called the comment "stupid," arguing that it will put the party in a bind when it comes to candidate recruitment and generally lower expectations and excitement over the 2010 elections. Others, who refused to go on the record, lamented the inevitable follow-up questions that would be asked to Republicans, such as: do you agree with the sentiments of the RNC Chairman?

And, sure enough, on Tuesday, the National Congressional Campaign Committee released a statement in which it basically slapped down Steele for his electoral prognostication.

"The NRCC's goal -- as the campaign arm of the House Republican Conference -- has always been to recapture the majority in 2010," said Ken Spain, press secretary for the committee. "Independent political analysts and even liberal columnists have stated that Republicans have a very real shot at taking back the majority in 2010. Make no mistake about it, we are playing to win."

It is extremely rare to see two campaign committees on such different pages when it comes to messaging. Steele was able to survive a rocky start to his tenure at the RNC. But the grumbling never fully died down -- and his remarks on Sean Hannity's radio show Monday night have only exacerbated the situation.

"I can't give a number [of seats the GOP will win] yet, because like I said, we're just now beginning to look at the races," Steele said. Asked if Republicans will take back the House, he confessed: "Not this year."

"I don't know all the candidates yet," Steele added. "We still have some vacancies that need to get filled, but then the question we need to ask ourselves is: 'If we do that, are we ready?'"

Seems as though the RNC is caught between the proverbial rock and a hard place. They gave him that spot because he could go up against the prez without being called racist, and if they remove him from his position, they, in turn, will be called racist... or at least foolish! Damned if they do and damned if they don't.

My heart bleeds. (snark)

"After all the republicants have done to people of color how can any person of color align themselves with them?"

Wouldn't it be interesting to learn that Michael Steele knew exactly how he was being used by the Republicans? And isn't it interesting that he's managed to do damage to the party from the inside, even as all the party leaders are having fits behind the scene?

It is the time of the chickens coming home to roost. No more lies and crooks. He/she who is dishonest in his/her actions will find the outcome none too pleasant! People are waking up and the Universe is rewarding our newly acquired intelligence!!!!

They made a huge mistake when they picked Steele, and he doesn't let them forget it. They thought having a black man in a high position would show people that they were as with-it as the Democrats. It was the same idea as nominating Sarah Palin as a substitute for Hillary Clinton. They thought people would vote for her just because she was a woman. The people for Hillary didn't back her solely for her gender, they backed her for her intelligence, something Palin lacked. The Republican party is in great disarray because they lack leadership and they don't embrace the younger generation. Their party has splintered into too many factions and wastes too much time on faulting the opposing party. Start with a fresh slate of young leaders and leave behind the wasteful hatred, it gets you nowhere.

Steele should know better than anyone that the current GOP cannot tolerate any critical thought. He must be a RINO. Bye Mike

They have every right to be furious. Telling the truth is a clear violation of Republican Party policy.

Dems------thank you Republican Party for your gift of Michael Steele as your chairman. You could have given us a tie or a pony or any meaningless gift, but you gave us the gift that keeps on giving. Thank you for your thoughtfulness. Word of caution: This in no way makes up for your foisting the plague of Sarah Palin upon the American public. There is no antibiotic for this.

One of the things that you don't want to do if you are big time in Repuglican politics is to get caught telling the truth once in a while.

I actually think Steele is the voice of reason which the Republican party desperately needs. They are Stars in their own minds only. They have yet to realize why they lost seats in 2006 and 2008. Steele asks "If we do (take back the congress) that, are we ready?"
NO they are not ready because they have not come to term with why they lost and have therefore not corrected their mistakes. IMHO they would make the same mistakes again.
Independence is a wonderful thing.
