Rudy Giuliani: 'We Had No Domestic Attacks Under Bush; We've Had One Under Obama'

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 3/18/10 Updated: 5/25/11

Rudy Giuliani has joined fellow Republicans Dana Perino and Mary Matalin in seeming to forget that the September 11th attacks happened under President Bush.

On "Good Morning America" Friday, the former New York mayor declared, "We had no domestic attacks under Bush; we've had one under Obama."

Not only does the statement suggest Giuliani does not remember the devastating attack in his own city, it also omits the anthrax attacks and the attempted shoe bomber attack.

Watch:

"Um, really?" wrote ABC News reporter Rick Klein on Twitter. Later he added, "even if Rudy MEANT to say post-9/11, what makes this incident different than [shoe bomber] Richard Reid, I wonder?" Of course, Giuliani could have been referring to the Fort Hood shootings rather than the botched underwear bombing.

A day earlier, Giuliani falsely claimed that the shoe bomber attack occurred before September 11th.

Curiously, the Associated Press did a long write-up of Giuliani's Obama criticisms but omitted the startling mistake. George Stephanopoulos, who conducted the ABC interview, included the quote in a blog post but did not question it.

OMG, you guys, talk me down. What does Giuliani know and when did he know it. So many things out of whack happened on 911. The two largest towers dropped incredibly fast for all the interior supports they had, basically in free fall. Tower 7 was "pulled". Now Giuliani is saying there was NO ATTACK during the Bush Administration. Mary Matalin says the same thing. What if they are not re-writing history at all? The FBI has never put OBL on their most wanted list. Bush even said 6 months later "I don't know where bin Laden is. I have no idea and really don't care. It's not that important. It's not our priority."

Has everyone forgotten the plane that went down on Nov 12, 2001 flight 587 that went down in Queens? It appears to me that it was swept right under the rug. I don't remember any serious investigation or answers to that horrible (accident)? It was exactly 2 months and 1 day after 911 and lets not forget the anthrax this all happened right after 911. Rudy give me a break!

Love this country? Vote out all republicans!

The republicans 'running' (destroying) this country for the last 8 years was the worst single domestic terrorists attack we will ever have.

guilianni, cheny, bushes etc are in position to numb the public mind with continuious lies and misinformation. you dont need to be a conspiracy theorist to get the depth of their purpose. my only warning is when you try to talk with persons who hear this garbage as their source of political information, you can see the fear, resentment and disbelief as you rationally (with facts no less) explain what is really happening. i'd love to tell you that these people of power are nothing but thieves and liars but you would have to research that yourself.

George should stop. He has no credibility left - he is not a hard interviewer, just a man looking to increase his wallet. He, like Fareed Zakaria, have lost their way and have given into the false journalism we call call reporting today. Roger Piles and Murdog have proved mathematics correct - everything goes to the lowest common denominator.

Are Republicans really that stupid or do they think we are?
10:28 AM on 01/11/2010
He is a FOOL, he thinks most Amerians are stupid...

What he obviously meant to say was that under Bush - we hadn't been attacked since the last time we were attacked. But that's like an alcoholic saying that he has been sober since his last drink.
08:15 AM on 01/11/2010
But Republicans don't believe New York is part of the "real America," so 9/11 shouldn't count.

Evne post-9/11, there were quite a few.

Typical Rethuglican revisionism.

This is just standard procedure for the right wing. Just repeat something often enough, make it a talking point, and the Fox news demographic will chime right in: "That's right! No domestic attacks under ol' iron fist GWB!".

He obviously meant "post-9/11."

Slow news day.
08:17 AM on 01/11/2010
So what if he did mean post 9/11? That's like saying Mark Sanford is a loyal, faithful husband, except for that mistress in Argentina.

The article focuses on the quote instead of all of what he said.

I did not address, nor do I agree with, Giuliani's mental machinations.

4 attacks under President William Jefferson Clinton(1993, 1995 1998 and 2000). 1 under President George Walker Bush (2001). Who did you feel safer under?

Definition is everything. Last year, hundreds of Americans died untimely through no fault of their own in violent acts that are reasonably called terroristic. We pick and choose, offering up hysterical defenses against the most unlikely terrorist assaults until you can hardly steal the lotions and shampoos from your hotel and pass through an airport. Towels, I guess are OK -- until somebody weaves one from a plastic explosive!

I understand the terrorist list has half a million names, practically the same as a big city phone book. The late Senator Kennedy had to motor from Massachusetts because his name got on the list. I don't like nihilism, but I'm not that impressed either.

Only the most horrific terrorist attack in U.S. history happened during the reign of Bush Jr. but whose counting?
