Whenever I see a Panda now, I think of propaganda, thanks to China. Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan were sent to Taipei to help the Taiwanese forget about the fact that China is currently in talks with the KMT party to annex this nation.

Red pandas are closer to weasels than to giant pandas.

Red pandas are in the superfamily Musteloidea, along with weasels, raccoons, and skunks.

Giant pandas are in the family Ursidae, which are the bears.

That said, the Musteloids share a common ancestor with the bears, but that was long long ago.

Are red pandas in any way related to giant pandas? They appear to have nothing to do with one another.

As in the above comment, they are a seperate family (Ailuridae) within the superfamily Musteloidea. Giant pandas are distantly related asthey are both within the order Carnivora. The red and giant panda are no more closely related than a cat and a dog. But both pandas share some similar adaptations to a diet of bamboo which evolved in parallel.
