why should we be surprised? Its about time we put the rights of children ahead of the rights adults in this country. America should lead the world in this effort. Seeing cooperation with cuba should be the first step in helping cubans, hatians, and dominicans be free. Watch the movie "with no one to protect them" on youtube it is The most powerful, telling video you will ever watch on haiti or extreme poverty. seriously i bet you cant see this all 8 minutes through without crying.

Kudos to Sanjay Gupta for staying with those sick patients last night after the UN told the medical staff to leave out of security concerns. I am so disappointed in the UN for that decision. I just hope it stops.

Hello all,

I know that most of you wonderful posters have donated to various relief organizations in support of the devastation in Haiti.

If you haven't already, please consider sending emails to your friends and family to donate to the following sites that I retrieved off of one of the HuffPo articles. I am retired with cancer now so I keep updated with all the latest news. However, when I was a working stiff, I was a workaholic and hardly kept up with the news. I know everyone knows about this tragedy, but they may not know how to donate so easily via text message. I sent the list to my 100 email buddies (family and friends), most who still work, to remind them to donate.

Please take the time out to send your friends and family this list:

Haiti Text-To-Give Numbers, via Gigaom and Mobile Giving Insider
•Text HAITI to 90999 to donate $10 to the American Red Cross
•Text HAITI to 25383 to donate $5 to International Rescue Committee
•Text HAITI to 45678 to donate $5 to the Salvation Army in Canada
•Text YELE to 501501 to donation $5 to Yele
•Text HAITI to 864833 to donate $5 to The United Way
•Text CERF to 90999 to donate $5 to The United Nations Foundation
•Text DISASTER to 90999 to donate $10 to Compassion International
•Text RELIEF to 30644 (this will connect you with Catholic Relief Services and instruct you to donate money with your credit card)”

The bottom line as I see it is, it doesn't make a flying poke at a rolling donut what country you're identifying with, just as long as that country and it's people realize that helping the less fortunate is the humanitarian and honorable thing to do (you may think you'll never need help and I hope you never do, but please help because it's the right thing to do). If it so happens, like me (the USA), you are fortunate enough to be a member of a rich and powerful country which enables your country to provide much more than a less wealthy country I can understand getting "big headed" sometimes (try not to over do it, only brag to your peers if you gotta' brag). The true fact though, is not how much you help (on a sliding scale, the rich the most), but the important thing is you helped. God bless those in Haiti

America still has the reputation as a country filled with the most generous people on the planet. Everywhere I have travelled recently, people tell me that while they don't like our approach to the Muslim world, they still feel that we are the most generous people in the world.

And we are. I'm proud of my country, my countrymen. All of them. Republicans and Democrats, all colors and languages. Men and women. We are a mighty fine people.

You need to dissociate the US from your claim, it is human nature to help those in need. We have the resources to help and we do it not because we are Americans, we do it because we are are human!

Everyone that can...needs to donate, something. If you aren't comfortable giving to the Red Cross here is a great website to find a charity of your choice:

The Salvation Army is a outstanding organization. As a retired Federal employee, I worked at the Pentagon during 9/11 and out of all the relief organization, the Salvation Army went over and beyond. They feed us, provide clothing, and shelter for those of us who sifted through the debris to remove documents, body parts, and evidence. I swear by them and since then I have donated money to their cause. I am also considering being a volunteer once I get my cancer in check.

The American Red Cross is also a good organization, however, between the two, I was more impressed with the generosity of the Salvation Army. So, if you ever see the Salvation Army out at Christmas, please drop a generous amount in their buckets. I can assure you that they use it to the utmost benefit of those who are in need or supporting those who are providing relief, search and rescue, and those who are victims of a catastrophe.

Wouldn't it be better for our country to spend our substantial resources on rescuing people in Haiti rather than on wars and bailouts for rich bankers?

Couldn't agree more! If there was oil in haiti we would have already sent half our military in to secure the oil fields and restore order. But then again if there was oil in haiti our military would of already been there!

Iraq was a waste of taxpayers money. Meanwhile we are not fighting a fake war anymore. We are making sure you sleep at night. The mission in Afghanistan is different.. which was left with soldiers abandon for years.

Remember 9/11.

Please , please , please donate to Doctors without borders, oxfam or countless other charitable organizations that are not affiliated with any religion. The massive loss of life can be partly laid at the door of of the Catholic and Christian religions that refuse to allow birth control, or sex education, this leads to over population, which leads to insufficient resources, which leads to a lack of funds for adequate building construction, too few hospitals and schools etc. It also led to all those unsafe structures being crowded with people living ten to a room!!! Now the IRC and the Catholic church, having bled these poor people dry for centuries are coming to us with their hand out for donations!!! . I am so over this nonsense.
10:13 PM on 01/14/2010
You are seriously blaming this catastrophe on Christianity?! Haiti's problem is not overpopulation--it's decades of corrupt government that have bankrupted what little the country had to begin with. Sheesh--you may have some beef with Christianity in general or the Catholic Church in particular, but to consider them the source of this loss of life is ridiculous.

Don't forget American intervention. We have ignored Haiti for a couple of decades and suddenly we care thanks to Obama. Under the Rush people Bush would have sent Christian missionaries and chump change.

Many Americans have been screaming here at home to pay attention to the unimaginable poverty in that country and all turned a blind eye. Now that the media turned the camera on them everyone is suddenly concern. It took this tragedy (of course the world is watching) for poor Haiti to get some help and attention.

May we never ignore Haiti again.

Suppose this was America and it was you walking through the streets over deceased bodies and no place to go my God can we just plain for these people to remain sane. I know I for one would be hysterical and not sure how much sanity I would have. Please pray for these people.

At the end of the day, and at the end of life, we're all the same.

This is not a time for politics or r@cism.
Regardless of what we think of these people based upon where they live or who runs their country, people injured and suffering.
They deserve the same care and compassion as anyone.

A catastrophe could happen right where you're sitting.

If an earthquake ruined your home and your life you'd want people to care and to help. If nothing else, we can all show compassion for these poor, unfortunate people.

Whenever we vilify and degrade any life, we're all diminished.
Our lives on this planet are too short, the work to be done too great, to let this spirit flourish.

Perhaps we can remember, if only for a time,
that those who live with us are our brothers and sisters,
that we share this same short moment of life,
that we seek nothing but the chance to live in purpose and in happiness,
winning what satisfaction and fulfillment that we can.

At the end of the day, and at the end of life we're all the same.

I have a strange question, and I hope it doesn't sound goulish. My daughter is 6 1/2 and goes to an IB school so they place a lot of emphasis on global issues and international community. They are raising money for Haiti - through the kids, like break open the piggy banks, etc. So she and I were talking about this and how horrible it is, why they need our help, etc. and she is having trouble getting her head around just how bad it is. She wants me to show her pictures but truthfully I don't see how I can do that they just seem beyond her age/capacity (not that she's not brilliant, of course). The picture in my newspaper wasn't quite enought though. How have other parents handled this?

I saw the photographs of the Jim Jones mass suicide (Very similar looking) when i was pretty young, and after all these years I have Never forgotten them. However, while they were traumatic to see, it made it Real to me and impacted me and my ability to empathize and feel compassion in a very personal and enduring way. While I understand why you're hesitant for her to see such awful things, especially at her age, perhaps it will affect her the same way. Also, with such an abundance of media sources these days, she'll probably run into them at some point anyway. Perhaps it would be better to see them with her mother who can explain it all to her and give her a big hug afterwards. :)

Surprised that someone here on HP hasn't condemned the little girl in the photo who is praying as a mindless/superstitious/etc for believing in God. Funny, usually people have something snarky to say about those of us who have faith.
05:49 PM on 01/14/2010
Funny how snarky your comment is, as a person of faith. Actually, not funny, just like Pat Robertson's comments aren't funny. Piety can make for very ugly behavior, unfortunately.
06:22 PM on 01/14/2010
Right, as if by comparing my observation with Robertson's 'devil' tirade, yours is somehow on a higher moral plane? Seems that snarkiness is evenly distributed across the human spectrum. :-)
