Jose Canseco: Mark McGwire STILL Lying About Steroids

The Associated Press   01/13/10 01:40 AM ET   AP

Jose Canseco Mark Mcgwire Lying Steroids

Jose Canseco says Mark McGwire is still lying about his use of steroids and his former manager Tony La Russa isn't telling the truth either.

McGwire admitted Monday that he used steroids for a decade, including when he hit 70 homers in 1998, but denied Canseco's claims that he injected himself and McGwire with steroids in bathroom stalls.

"I've defended Mark, I know a lot of good things about him," Canseco told ESPN 1000 radio in Chicago on Tuesday. "I can't believe he just called me a a liar. Umm, there's something very strange going on here.

"I even polygraphed that I injected him, and I passed it completely. So I want to challenge him on national TV to a polygraph examination. I want to see him call me a liar under a polygraph examination."

In Canseco's 2005 book, "Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant 'Roids, Smash Hits, and How Baseball Got Big," Canseco claimed he introduced McGwire and other stars to steroids and performance-enhancing drugs. He wrote about injecting himself and McGwire in bathroom stalls, and how the effects of the drugs were the reason he hit 462 career home runs.

Canseco and McGwire helped lead the Athletics to a World Series sweep in 1989.

"Jose is out there doing what he's doing, but I'm not going to stoop down to his level," McGwire told ESPN on Tuesday. "None of that stuff happened. He knows it. I know it. I'm not going to stoop down to that level."

La Russa was McGwire's manager for nearly all of his 16-year career in both Oakland and St. Louis. He was also his fiercest defender, especially after The Associated Press reported McGwire used androstenedione during his record-breaking season in '98. Andro, as it was known, was made a controlled substance until 2004, when it also was banned by baseball.

The manager said he didn't know until Monday that McGwire used steroids.

"That's a blatant lie," Canseco said. "There are some things here that are so ridiculous, and so disrespectful for the public and the media to believe. I just can't believe it. I'm in total shock. These guys remind me of politicians that go up and just lie to the public and expect to get elected."

McGwire, who retired in 2001, had been widely ridiculed since he evaded questions before a congressional committee five years ago, repeatedly saying he wasn't there to address his past. His confession was sparked by the Cardinals' decision in October to hire him as hitting coach.

Canseco has said he is considering filing a class-action lawsuit against Major League Baseball and the players' association. He says he's been ostracized for going public with tales of steroids use in the sport.

"I've proved it. I'm 100 percent accurate," he told the radio station. "I never exaggerate, I told it the way it actually happened. I'm the only one who told it the way it actually happened."

Frank Gifford at about 180 pounds was a running back for the NY Giants. No way he could play in the NFL today. The quarterback Eddie Lebaron? Athletes have evolved naturally, in McGwires case unnaturally.

Not just McGuire. Many used steroids in the late nineties when they were all hitting homeruns. McGuire, Bonds, Sosa and I'm sure Canseco and many others. Baseball players that were hitting 10 homeruns a year, were now hitting twenty or more. It just happens that steroids or not, Sammy, McGuire and Bonds were the best. I say let them keep their record. Just be stricter with the new players. In a way I can understand why they did it. And when I watch football with my husband, I'm sure many of those guys are probably using it too. Athletes are competitive and they want to be the best. Even if they sacrifice their bodies. I kind of feel sorry for them.

I think Canseco needs to shut up already. No one cares about you anymore. I think he is so petty the way he is trying to destroy other players. By the way, Bond and McGuire were exciting players. They actually revived Baseball. I like Bonds. I'm proud of him. Steroid use does not bother me. No difference than any other drug, except it makes you strong. I don't approve of it, but since it didn't affect me, I'm not going to be so judgemental. I think Jose should just go away.

yes......and forget what roger maris, hank aaron, and babe ruth did. let's just juice all athletes so that us fans can watch all the exciting sports out there.

and let's not stop at PED technology. let's have athletes replace all their bones with titanium, so football players can withstand all those collisions and not break a single bone.

in fact, if the technology is there, let's replace each athlete's bodies with cybernetic ones. this way, any damaged athlete can be replaced on the next play, just like that.

imagine all the exciting, natural sports we'd be watching. ya....those lousy snitchers can kiss it.

Are you a fan of "Futurama" and "blurn"?
08:24 AM on 01/14/2010
I don't think anyone really cares (aside from family, maybe) about whether the steroids are hurting these athletes who earn million dollar contracts and fame off of their use. The fact is, if players were willing to do steroids, they increased their chances of success and it greatly skewed the playing field. The issue is that the game was supposed to be played a certain way. Baseball, more than any other sport, has held on to the belief that there is a certain 'spirit of the game' and cheating and ethical misconduct nullifies a players' record (Blacksox, Pete Rose). A lot of good players used steroids, but not all of them did. It was an unfair advantage but it was worth it for MLB because it saved the sport. You may not feel the affect of steroid use since we don't have access to the athlete, but it is shameful for any professional league to be supported by drugs. But it sure makes a good story and baseball is making more money than ever. Baseball won with steroids. Canseco was right... wow

Darn, when I saw a challenge was issued, I hoped it was to a dance-off.

Next time.

Canseco had the talent to be one of the best ever -- too bad he was more interested in taking short cuts than in working on his game.

So if the drug that were being used by players to enhance their performance was heroin that would be cool with some of you?'

Heroin makes people friendlier and less aggressive. An enhanced human performance.Same deal hypocrits?
07:28 PM on 01/13/2010
What on earth does that have to do with my post?
06:12 PM on 01/13/2010
Any records since at least 1995 should be marked with an asterisk. It's as if the track association shortened the hundred yard dash or lowered the high hurdles All the big name baseball players did and are still doing various drugs.

Not even an asterik. They should not be there. why should they be there?:Why????

" they cheated but the record is sooooo cool we want to display it anyway", it is higher than the other records . wow"

these guys cheated, no way around it, the hell with them..$$$$$ enough!
07:59 PM on 01/13/2010
No asterisk. But they should have the name of the drug next to the record, not the name of the "player".

Yet he still lives in a great home with all the amenities money can buy. What kind of compensation do we get? None, not even a reduced ticket price.

It's not the organizations fault is it? They can't be around the players every minute of the day, right? WRONG, they know every inch of every player and if they don't see the changes it's because they don't want to.

Looks like lies and deception have become part of the American Pass time.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I believe Canseco.

Mark McGuire has already proven himself to be a pathological liar. He's lied so many f***ing times to the public, to Congress, to the league...why should anyone believe him?

Canseco on the other hand has been right every f***ing time so far and his story isn't changing ever minute and every hour.

Canesco has been telling the truth from the beginning. Are there really people out there that think he is maknig this up? If so thinka gain, please.

The only reason McGuire fessed up is because of his new job. He is a punk in reality. figure it out.A punk who used drugs to enhance his performance. A nice act to follow for our children. : do whatever you have to do to excel, lie , cheat, steal, do drugs that give you an advantage.

The value in America is the $$$ it does not matter how you get it. Nice, and the truth, take it or leave it.

Keep in mind that the MLB interviewers caught Canseco in some major contradictions. He claimed in his book that he injected McGwire "more times that he could count." Then when interviewed he backed off this big time, claimed that was about mlb players overall, and added he couldn't remember how many time it was McGwire but thought it was once or twice. So you have to ask yourself which Canseco you believe.

Canseco might not be a liar about some major things but I do think MLBN's Mitch Williams was right in saying that doesn't mean he's 100% truthful, either. I esp. think the "blackball" issue was overblown and potentially a sign Jose is paranoid (a symptom of heavy usage? McGwire doesn't seem paranoid). I don't get how Canseco could in some ways endorse things McGwire said (like about his abilities and level of use) and then be inconsistent (as per his book) on the injection claim while saying he injected McGwire. Whadda mess. I am guessing McGwire regrets the whole thing just for the continued association with Canseco.

lisakazz2: do you have a thing for McGwire? You say Canesco may be lying about the minor things, therefore the major things should be?

Nice that according to you McGwire does not seem paranoid. Wow that is great!

Agreed.

I'd give Canseco whistleblower status. Without him coming forward, MLB would still be MLC... as in Major League Cheaters.

Also, I think MLB should be slapped with an antitrust suit. FIrst thing is to force the Comish to be an independent body.
