Danny Glover: Haiti Earthquake Caused By Global Warming

First Posted: 3/18/10 Updated: 5/25/11

Pat Robertson said that "a pact to the devil" caused the devastating earthquake in Haiti, and now Danny Glover proposes a marginally less insensitive cause: climate change.

"What happened in Haiti could happen to anywhere in the Caribbean because all these island nations are in peril because of global warming," Glover said. "When we see what we did at the climate summit in Copenhagen, this is the response, this is what happens, you know what I'm sayin'?"

Mr. Glover's remarks are not as far-fetched as they seem.

As the WorldWatch Institute reports, scientists propose that global warming may be contributing to increased seismicity.

This is due primarily to large-scale mass shifts as glaciers melt and ocean surfaces evaporate.

To dispel this idea, nip it in the bud so to speak. Glaciers may be large to a human, but on a global scale they are tiny. A glacier is like a flake of dead skin on the surface of your arm. If it disappears, it is unlikely the structure of your arm is going to shift, causing seismic activity.

Note that the earth's crust is hundreds of miles thick on many places. How could the mass of a few inches of water affect the crust? Please enlighten me. I'd like to hear your thoughts and rebuttals. Lets all get together in this discussion. Too much MISINFORMATION and THEORY presented as the new TRUTH.

I am not yelling, only emphasizing. Tell me what you think please.

Nowhere in the video does Glover come even close to saying "Haiti Earthquake Caused By Global Warming" or anything remotely like that! There's no author listed for this post, but whoever they are they must not understand the English language. Glover doesn't talk until the end of the video, but just listen starting at around 1:30. At 1:48 Glover says, "...and I hope we seize this particular moment, because this thread of what happened to Haiti is a thread that can happen anywhere in the Caribbean and these island nations. They're all in peril because of global warming. They're all in peril because of climate change. And all the...this...this...when we did what we did at the climate summit in Copenhagen...this is the response, this is what happened, you know what I'm saying? We have to act now!"

I challenge anyone to tell me where in that video he claimed "Haiti Earthquake Caused By Global Warming."

No, it is caused by God, who is ticked off at us for not getting together on climate change in Coppenhagen (since we have made a pact with the Devil not to do anything about that)! See, Danny Glover and Pat Robertson are saying the same thing!

Before the barbs are thrown, please recognize satire when you see it...

Very important stuff. Many believe Danny Glover to be one of the most informed scientists on the planet.

Has anybody found Mel Gibson's reaction to Danny's comments?

I gotta know what Mel thinks before I decide if Danny is ignorant or what.

The Hufffington Post's transcript of Danny Glover's comments fails to account for his self corrections as he fumbles for appropriate words. The quote is also inaccurate in addition to tearing his words from their context.

Glover tries to express the vulnerability of Caribbean countries to natural disasters. The amount of threats to the region, according to Glover, are going to increase because of global warming. If the US doesn't act now then similar devastation is bound to reoccur. Be it by earthquake or more hurricanes. Glover claims that tragedies like the one in Haiti will happen again if we fail to act like we did in Copenhagen. He does not state that global warming caused the tragedy in Haiti but that impoverished nations in the area are especially vulnerable to natures destruction. Glover's use of "threat" as a general term for the threat of natures destruction has been falsely assumed to mean "earthquake"
03:41 AM on 01/17/2010
Note: words in parentheses in the below transcription are his self corrections or stutters.

"This is a great moment for another type of internationalism, you know. (And and I and) I hope we seize this particular moment because the threat of what happened to Haiti is a threat that could happen anywhere in the Caribbean, to these Island nations. You know there's all this peril because of global warming, (because—) all this peril because of climate change, and all of this. (And we need to find, this this, when we when we back) When we do what we did at the climate summit, in Copenhagen, (this is the response—) this is what happens, you know what I'm saying. But we have to act now."

I apologize for not having the time to transcribe his comments before those currently under scrutiny. The audio is rather poor please let me know if I missed something.

He could learn about tectonic plates, I don't think they have anything to do with climate change, which has been happening over 3 billion years, why should it now stop? All te meetings in the world won't stop climate change as it is natural anyway.

Gotta love everyone mocking the man when what he states is, in fact, scientifically correct: http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20327273.800-climate-change-may-trigger-earthquakes-and-volcanoes.html?full=true

Did any of you even go to the trouble of entering 'climate change earthquakes'? Nah, comfortable ignorance is much comforting and easy.

Thanks for the link, that's interesting. I don't think what he said was so far off base, but he said it off the cuff and could have phrased it better. And some may disagree with the timing as being insensitive.

Fact is, even with irrefutable proof that global warming is causing and will cause increased hurricanes and earthquakes, those things have all existed for as long as we know. So we'll never be able to look at any particular storm or quake and say it definitely wouldn't have happened if not for global warming. That said, I don't think it was his intention to imply that.

Read what you linked to, that is funny. Let me explain how the center of the earth works as you seem to have forgotten before posting that crappy article. The center of the earth is molting lava. reason we volcanos and what not, the center of the earth has to vent after all. What happens is peices of the earths crust shifts as the center basically melts it away. hope the common sense dosen't hurt your brain.

"Molting lava"? Seriously? OK, if you're going to try to refute someone on science try to at least have a clue. The inner core of the earth is solid. Parts of the mantle are molten, yes, but the core is solid. Educate yourself: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Structure_of_the_Earth

so glover believes that the earth is alive and striking back at us for not getting rid of all cars in copenhagen....if that is true we don't have to do anything at all...when mother earth is tired of us she will just kill us all to protect herself.....

This headline is a lie, He did not say the earthquake was caused by global warming. He simple stated the fact that the changing climate, will increase the likelihood of natural disasters, especially in island nations.

Climate change is real, but it is not the effects of carbon dioxide causing it. The source of heat on the earth is the sun. Please study up and let me know what you think.

Glover is like a lot of Hollywood. They get off the set, and really believe they are the character they play on the screen. He's completely taken in with Gore's propaganda as are many others. But the Obama administration is using this debacle to siphon money into Lobbyists pet projects for the company's that will benefit by this scare. And just wait till the Carbon tax hits small businesses . If you think the Unemployment figures are high now, wait until small business after business folds. This administration tramples upon the Constitution at every turn, but nothing is done up till now. They can make a good start by prosecuting the Black Panthers for their outrageous stopping of people at the polls last year. And then stop white-washing ACORN for Voter Registration fraud... Holder sits upon his hands whenever these types are guilty. Check what the UAW will get in tax options for the new Socialize Med plan. Good thing we don't have too many Glovers to go along with all the rest of the sheep. They capitalize on their celebrity, and some dim-witted fans follow their every word.

The original post is not only asinine, but a lie. Did anyone actually watch the video and listen to the conversation?

The headline and the post were heavily edited, with words lifted out and sentences strung together. Even then, Glover did not say the earthquake was caused by global warming. He said this disaster is similar to what will happen if global warming is not addressed. He was talking about disaster.

You are a fool when you believe something you read or hear without getting all the facts.
