Al Sharpton: Pat Robertson's Haiti Comments 'Un-Christian'

Sharpton
The Rev. Al Sharpton spoke at Chicago's Christ Universal Temple on Sunday, criticizing Pat Robertson's remarks on Haiti.

The Rev. Al Sharpton came to the Christ United Temple on Chicago's South Side Sunday, asking churches to contribute to Haiti relief funds. Along the way, he expressed outrage for televangelist Pat Robertson's recent remarks about Haitians' "pact with the devil."

Chicago Breaking News reports that Sharpton derided Robertson's remarks as "un-Christian":

"To bring this kind of negative and wicked spirit into a scene where we are watching children's dead bodies stacked up is abominable to me," said Sharpton, who also criticized radio commentator Rush Limbaugh's musings that the tragedy would play into President Barack Obama's political plans.

"This kind of foolishness, while people are laying in the rubble in Haiti fighting for their lives, shows a contempt some people have for the human condition."

But Sharpton didn't ask for an apology from Robertson or Limbaugh, saying instead that his actions and those of other religious leaders should serve as a "clean glass" in contrast to the muddied waters of Robertson and his ilk.

Rev. Carlton Pearson of Christ United Temple told Sharpton his congregation hoped to raise $25,000 for the cause. Sharpton also says he's hoping to travel to Haiti in the coming weeks for a rescue mission.

I went through that stage too. Then I came around to a commitment to assist the forces of reform. But there's none out there. The mainstream is apathetic. No one is in the watchtower and the walls are about to come tumbling down. The problem seems to be that most are religious but few are spiritual. And the evangelicals in particular seem too spiritually shallow to offer anything to their converts beyond the initial conversion experience, which only requires a profession of faith followed by baptism and cheap grace. But no real spiritual avenues are offered beyond that.

After that stage, involving looking at the allegorical truth of it's texts, I next came to the realization that sheer idolatry was keeping the literalists from perceiving The Way that is offered in the bible's teachings.

What do you expect Pat Robertson to say, he is Pat Robertson!

There is a long list of stupid Pat Robertson comments. Google famous quotes by him and see what comes up. If you think that his last comment was bad, then, you are in for a real surprise when you read the rest of what he has said.

P.S. Pat; be careful how you judge other people. Luke 6:36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
37 Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:

The only role religion should play in any of this is for each individual to seek spiritual strength based on their respective religous persuasion to be able to see that in the end we are all a part of the human family and helping each other is a natural instinct. The tragic events in Haiti should only awaken us to how fragile we all are on one hand...our collective action should serve to show how Strong we are when we unite on the other. Leave people who spend their lives pontificating for gain to their own miserable ill fated devises. Don't let anyone call you a "bleeding heart" either.. When you act to help others without reservation this only strengthens you more. If Haiti's tragedy is somehow an act of the so called "devil" then show the devil that we are not affraid and that he/it..whatever can't possibly beat us all.

For some reason Robertson's comment did not bother me as much as Rush's cynical response, at least Pat offered prayers and donations after his comment, Rush's comments were just mean spirited and uncalled for, Pat may truly believe his story right or wrong.

It's people like Robertson that made Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi say this: “I consider western Christianity in its practical working a negation of Christ’s Christianity.”

I couldn't agree more, Eric!! I love how Christians are so damn hypocritical!

Hey Pat Robertson, what about " do unto others as you would do unto yourself!!!!!????"

I am NOT a fan of Sharpton but I'll give him credit for taking a stand against Robertson and loser Limbaugh.

I agree 100% with the Reverend. It's simply a shame that demons like Pat Robertson are widely accepted as "Christian" leaders when they are known for spreading hate and descension wherever they go. This is why I would never claim to be "christian". Fools like Robertson and other mainstream republicans have polluted the Christian religion.

After so many years of suffering the hypocrisies of folks like Robertson, who seem entrenched in the Old Testament, I've come to see that many of them are still living in the ancient world, long before the reform introduced by Christianity. The evidence is overwhelming that the OT G-d is a vengeful father who punishes entire nations with earthquakes and storms. I don't have any hope that they will let go their bible idolatry.

True Christians -- and there are many -- look to CHRIST as their guide and their hearts are filled with his love. The church is being tested and many who would consider themselves "righteous" are failing that test. Matthew 25

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God -- whether they profess christ or not, they have him in their heart and they are in alot better shape than many of the CBN ilk...

Wake up and repent Pat Robertson and all of his supporters/apologists...

Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, Pastors of money-making megachurches, and money-grabbing minichurch pastors are in the Christian business for the power and riches it gives them. I do not want my name associated with anything "Christian" by their definition.

Un-Christian, maybe. Atypical, not so much.

Sharpton has his own history to deal with, so I think his pronouncements on Robertson are too much pot/kettle.

Rev Sharpton is known to repent & beg for the Lord's mercy. That is no secret. Rev Sharpton isn't perfect but he is seeking Jesus's aid in seeking perfection. Perfection is said to an impossible goal for humans but Christians seek Jesus's aid in seeking the goal of perfection. The 1st step in seeking forgivness is to acknowledge your mistakes.

I have followed Pat Robertson's shameful career and he has never apologized for anything he has ever said or done. Forgiveness for him is therefore not an issue.

Mr. Robertson, has always said things like this, and even if he thought this it did not have to come out of his mouth. But whatever is in the heart will come out of the mouth, I can't understand at this time why he felt the need to say this because these are gods people also. I think sometime, some think their better than others and they have the dibbs on who is going to heaven and who is not, but I believe we will all be suprise of the ones who think their going to heaven, and will not & then they see who is going. We need to practice to keep our stupid thoughts to ourselves,he has already judged the haitain people, so my question to him is who? are we here in America serving. We have murders, rapes, 911, Columbine, Oklahoma Bombing, killing & molesting innocent children, men killing their families, mothers killing their children, ect..... the good book said all this would occur because of fallen man & sin. So I guess with all that said we are perfect, things that make you go mmmmmm.

Pat Robertson and Rick Warren and their type have turned Christianity into a joke.

They're just two in a long line of comedians starting roughly at about 400 CE.
