Bush, Clinton Say Haiti Response Should Be Bi-Partisan Effort

WASHINGTON — Former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton say the earthquake in Haiti offers a chance to put aside politics and help people in despair. Bush and Clinton appeared on five Sunday talk shows as part of their effort to lead private fundraising efforts for Haitian relief, including immediate needs and the long-term rebuilding effort. President Barack Obama asked them to lead the bipartisan effort.

"I'd say now is not the time to focus on politics," Bush said in an interview taped Saturday for CBS' "Face the Nation" when the ex-presidents' visited the White House.

"You've got people who are ... children who've lost parents. People wondering where they're going to be able to drink water," Bush said. "There's a great sense of desperation. And so my attention is on trying to help people deal with the desperation."

Bush said that he doesn't know what critics are talking about when they claim Obama is trying to score political points with a broad response to Haiti's woes. The most vocal critic has been radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh, who urged people not to donate and said he wouldn't trust that money donated to Haiti through the White House Web site would go to the relief efforts. He said people contribute enough by paying income taxes.

Clinton said, "I just think it doesn't do us any good to waste any time in what is in my opinion a fruitless and pointless conversation."

He added: "In a disaster of this magnitude there's no way that the government, which has other responsibilities as well, national security and other responsibilities – you just can't deal with this just with government money."

Clinton, speaking on NBC's "Meet the Press," said a disaster like the earthquake in Haiti "reminds us of our common humanity. It reminds us of needs that go beyond fleeting disagreements." He said political debate is healthy in normal times, but it would be perverse in a time of disaster to let politics get in the way of helping.

He said the timing is important to fundraising efforts and long-term goals for Haiti.

"Everybody who's seriously followed Haiti over a long period of time believed that Haiti ... had the best chance it has had in our lifetimes to break the chains of its past," Clinton said on CNN's "State of the Union," "to build a truly modern state, to have a more thriving economy, an honest and competent government, better health care, better education, more self-generated clean energy – the whole nine yards."

The former presidents also appeared on ABC's "This Week" and "Fox News Sunday."

I guess Poppy Bush is too old to carry the bags of money, so he's sent Junior. Ever notice that when there are $billions around a Clinton and Bush pop out to lend a helping hand--just like Katrina and the tsunami. It's all about the money.

Good. Relief efforts require money.

Much better accomplished by people with money and who can raise money, than some unwashed, socially "pure" college student stumping for dimes and quarters.

This event is epic. It requires grown-ups with access to REAL CAPITAL.

Hush, already.

this may not be a poliltical issue for Clinton because he's the ambassador to Haiti, he's been there many times; the people LOVE him. Bush is another story, since Pres. Obama asked Bush and Clinton to help out, it has been Clinton that traveled to the island not Bush, he has yet to set foot on that soil. No, this is an opportunity for Bush to redeem himself after the way he handled Katrina, it was him and his greedy little war monger family and friends that benefited from that disaster, his own mother declared that the people were better off living in the "superdome", one of the right wing city counsel members was gleeful that the levee broke, he said they'd been trying to "git rid" of those people for years; what they couldn't accomplish; God did it for them. So, this is a chance for Bush to clean up his legacy a little bit. It all Politics baby!!!

Obama would be the more likely one to set foot on ground in Haiti......why, oh why, do you think Bush should do that.....this is Obama's baby......he asked Bush and Clinton to help raise money for relief. He asked Bush for his help and 2 days later in Mass. he absolutely threw him under the bus, again....Obama has absolutely NO class. His "Haiti" is falling apart (as well as his presidency, I might add).

Indirectly helping Haiti for the US is a political issues. Not so much for helping Haiti but for US's emergency services to be able to react to an emergency with in a timely period. The requirement for any modern democracy is to have a fully functioning relief effort on the ground to any region within it's boundaries should be inside of 24 hours, anything more than that is gross incompetence and the corrupt desire to feed psychopathic corporations with relief fund profits. Many democratic countries should consider aid efforts for disasters in other countries as important practice, lest they repeat incompetent efforts and delays resulting from private contract negotiations and naturally of course bickering over kickbacks, all while people are dying.

It is in our interest for two simple reasons:

First, it is the moral good--an imperative this country intuitively understands--and one which we selflessly address.

Second, we need to contain this disaster, not allow a flood of refugees to hit Florida, et al. If Haiti is ever to be rebuilt, it will need the human capital of it's most energetic and ambitious citizens--precisely the ones who would be most able to flee. That drain on the entrepenurial and human capital must be prevented--humanely.

Good point...
The people of Haiti should rebuild their country with the aid and support of other nations.

Me thinks Haiti is turning into Obama's Katrina...........people are without food, water, shelter, and medical care and it is now 6 days after the earthquake. It is Katrina all over again.....but Obama thought he could do it right. But here is the bottom line.....it is not easy to deal with a natural disaster....it takes time, a lot of coordination. Perhaps we see now that Katrina was handled better than many thought. Many of the same things that the dems blamed Bush for during Katrina is now happening in Haiti, and I know Haiti is not in our country, but we seem to be ramroding the show. Before anyone replies negatively to my post, remember the people of Haiti had no warning, the people of New Orleans had days and days of warning, but unfortunately no leadership in New Orleans or the state of Lousiana.....kinda like the government of Haiti.......remember posse comitatus............
09:54 PM on 01/18/2010
What utter nonsense. Lousianna is a US state and did not suffer from the vast infrastructure problems and language barrier that Haiti presents. It seems like you and your ilk are to eager to turn any and everything into Obama's Katrina.

Just when many are beginning to think Obama is at best a version of corporate-friendly Clinton, and at worst a continuation of rendition-Guantanamo Bush, there they are in a photo-op together. Who is running this White House? Don't they get it?

It would be more palatable reading that non-politicians were ahead of the effort.
Globalists are the bankers own, and work counter to the sovereignty of the U.S.
10:38 AM on 01/18/2010
As long as Bush is not running the show, I respect his decision to come out of hiding and help. And since there are still so many bush supporters, it can only help the Haitians - and that is what matters right now.
04:17 AM on 01/18/2010
Mr. Bush and Mr. Clinton: Now that is an interesting comment for you to make. You must certainly be aware that there would be a whole lot more to share with whomever in the world were it not for the style of presidential leadership that you had shown, and it would be in the hands of the people that are most inclined to give. Certain things that you did have been very, very painful to a large majority of us.

Funny, Bush wants to *help* the Haitians people now since he had arranged the ousting/kidnapping of Aristide.
And then there's Clinton. He allowed Aristide to come back from exile to Haiti under specific conditions-but what about the Haitian people--what did Clinton do for them? Can anyone say "sweatshop?"
No human rights for Haitians from either party.
Shame.

Not politically motivated?

Economically motivated by "globalist ambitions"?

Certainly.

What took you so long, and is that what the democracy-tossing coups were for?

Here's one person's take on Haiti:

The most humane thing we could possibly do is implement MASS, MANDATORY birth control throughout Haiti. How can they possibly keep bringing so many children into the world??? If they want any respect, they need to start controlling their population. The amount of children being born into complete poverty is a CRIME. MANDATORY BIRTH CONTROL OR NO AID. PERIOD That should be implemented in the City of Detroit too.

Just sayin' maybe Bill and George could first solve the immediate problems and then hang 'round and work on a long term solution.
