popeater.com:

Mel Gibson has gone through a lot of drama in his long Hollywood career. But nothing seemingly comes close to finally quitting his 45-year smoking habit. Moving onto Day 9 without cigarettes, an edgy Gibson spoke to reporters at a press conference promoting his long-awaited return to the screen in 'Edge of Darkness.' The clear message was resuming acting: not so tough. Quitting the cancer sticks: "hellish." More on Mel's "torture" after the jump!

I smoked for 15 years...which in comparison isn't that long. That was 7 years ago, and to this day, there are times I think about smoking and I just choose not to. That's what it comes down to, because like any addiction, it never totally leaves you. So if he's only on day 9, ya he has an uphill battle.

I quit 22 years ago. No 12-steps, no giving my life to Jesus. It was a matter of priorities, and smoking lost to staying in shape.

Quitting smoking is h.e.l.l.. I think there ought to rehabs for people trying to get off cigarettes, and I don't understand why the psych community hasn't jumped on the idea.

First give up the smokes. Then the booze? Maybe then the bigotry? Lot of work to be done here.

I don't like Mels politics or religion, but I know quitting is very hard. So good luck Mel.

The only person I know who quit cold turkey without a problem was my 77 year old dad, dead now for 20 years, he quit 3 years before he died. I was in the kitchen with him at the time and he looked at his cigarette, said "I have smoked long enough" [he started when he was 11 and was for decades a 2 pack a day man], put out the cigarette and never had another. It was an amazing experience to witness.

I quit cold turkey after 30 years 11 years ago. Hardest drug there is to quit.

He's right there. Cigarettes are harder than heroin to give up. And it galls me the way state and local governments latch on to this addiction in order to raise revenue.

i still laugh at this sad old bigot's mug shots. keep smoking 'em, you old jerk.
01:26 PM on 01/18/2010
Wow! You can't even encourage or congratulate a person who is trying to better himself. That's sad! A great example of what's wrong with our politics today, nobody can find any good in people they disagree with.
04:18 PM on 01/18/2010
I don't see that he's trying to better himself. He just had a child from an affair out of wedlock. He is trying to quit smoking.

A 54 year old quitting a 45 year habit. Where were your parents back then, Mel? Or didn't they care if their 9 year old was smoking?

What about the drinking and his addiction to hatred (religion)
02:22 PM on 01/18/2010
Anyone addicted to the disdain of religion is a hero. Anyone practicing ANY religion is merely aiding in the retardation of humanity`s moral and social evolution.

Much luv Mr. Gibson, best of luck!

Mel Gibson's rap sheet speaks volumes for what he actually did.
Keep bashing atheists for Mel's frailties,
"religious" hypocrite estupidissimo.
