Cat Goddess Temple: Egypt Announces Find Of Ancient Temple

HAMZA HENDAWI   01/19/10 07:21 PM ET   AP

Mideast Egypt Alexandria

CAIRO — Archaeologists have unearthed a 2,000-year-old temple that may have been dedicated to the ancient Egyptian cat goddess, Bastet, the Supreme Council of Antiquities said Tuesday. The ruins of the Ptolemaic-era temple were discovered by Egyptian archaeologists in the heart of the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria, founded by Alexander the Great in the 4th century B.C.

The city was the seat of the Greek-speaking Ptolemaic Dynasty, which ruled over Egypt for 300 years until the suicide of Queen Cleopatra.

The statement said the temple was thought to belong to Queen Berenice, wife of King Ptolemy III who ruled Egypt in the 3rd century B.C.

Mohammed Abdel-Maqsood, the Egyptian archaeologist who led the excavation team, said the discovery may be the first trace of the long-sought location of Alexandria's royal quarter.

The large number of statues depicting Bastet found in the ruins, he said, suggested that this may be the first Ptolemaic-era temple dedicated to the cat goddess to be discovered in Alexandria.

This would indicate that the worship of the ancient Egyptian cat-goddess continued during the later, Greek-influenced, Ptolemaic period, he said.

Statues of other ancient Egyptian deities were also found in the ruins, he added.

Zahi Hawass, Egypt's chief archaeologist, said the temple may have been used in later times as a quarry as evidenced by the large number of missing stone blocks.

Modern Alexandria was built squarely on top of the ruins of the classical-era city and many of its great temples, palaces and libraries remain undiscovered.

The temple was found in the Kom el-Dekkah neighborhood near the city's main train station and home to a Roman-era amphitheater and well preserved mosaics.

I just finished reading a biography of Dewey, the Library Cat who was world famous and reigned over the Spencer, Iowa public library for 19 years, to my middle schooler, who still wants cat stories read to him before lights out. He can't get enough of Garfield, either.

Proves that cats are gods that cast magic spells, reincarnated in many ways.

Any of you tried to handle feral cats for spaying/neutering? Not all cats are nice.

I rescued 21 feral cats from my old apartment complex (15 kittens, 6 adults) last summer. If you show them patience, attention, and affection they come around pretty fast.

A free meal also helps.

2 years ago a blur kept running through the carport. Finally saw a long haired tabby no bigger than the palm of my hand. Left food out at times to avoid other critters. Eventually she would pop her head out of her hiding place and watch me arrage food. I did it slowly enough for her to get use to it and realize I wasn't going to chase her. I'd go inside and peak out the window and watch her eat. If she saw me watching - zipp - eventually she was OK with seeing me see her. Eventually she'd fall off her perch at loving that I'd scratch her head and back. Eventually I could sit by the food. Then pet her as she ate. Left the house door open so she could come in and look. Didn't rush anything. Trip to the vet for health check, shots and nutering. She's still about 1/2 the size of a football. Crazy spunkie and in charge of the world but is as lovable and caring as one could imagine. Trust is compassion's reward.

I fully agree. Cats prove that the Author of the Universe has a sense of humor and traffics in grace. They are wonderful animals and I absolutely love them! I believe they are a life form from another world that was put here to teach us the concept of "mystery". The hapless Abrahamic religions would have done much better if they would have taught that dogs are the life form BEFORE your soul incarnates as a human and cats are the life form for your soul AFTER you incarnate as a human. Cats are superior to humans in every way. They have it made!

Were the universe ruled by a divine Kitty Cat...
a. Every so often, all planets would be arbitrarily batted about and left on other deities' doorsteps
b. String theory would be the correct cosmology
c. Periodically time itself would stop, due to the Heavenly Naptime

HYMN TO BASTET

Bastet calls the kittens dear,
“Come to me and never fear,
For I love the little kittens of the world;
Make your home within my fur,
I will give you cause to purr,
For I love the little kittens of the world.”

(Refrain):

Bastet loves the little kittens
All the kittens of the world,
Striped and spotted, black and white,
They’re so precious in Her sight
Bastet loves the little kittens of the world.

Bastet is your Mother true
And she’ll always stand by you,
For she loves the little kittens of the world.
She’s a goddess, great and strong,
And she’ll shield you from all wrong,
For she loves the little kittens of the world.

(Refrain)

So I come, before your throne,
I will make this cat my own,
For you love the little kittens of the world.
Great Bastet, I do declare,
For this cat, I’ll always care,
For you love the little kittens of the world.

(Refrain)
