Gaspar Llamazares, Spaniard Used In Bin Laden Picture, Rejects US Apology

MADRID — A Spanish lawmaker on Tuesday angrily rejected the United States' apology for the FBI's using a photo of him to create a poster showing what Osama bin Laden might look like today.

Gaspar Llamazares, of Spain's communist-run United Left party, demanded the U.S. investigate the incident and take appropriate action.

"Apologies are not enough," he told a news conference at Parliament after the U.S. ambassador apologized via Spain's interior minister on Monday.

"I want a thorough investigation into this disgraceful case, which not only causes concern but also worry and indignation over the behavior of the FBI," he said, adding that he did not rule out legal action.

The FBI used parts of a photo of Llamazares taken from Google Images to create a digitally modified image of the al-Qaida leader for a new wanted poster, which appeared on the State Department Web site and offered a reward of up to $25 million.

The FBI said the forensic artist had been unable to find suitable features among the reference photographs of bin Laden, and in part used features from a photograph found online.

The FBI has since removed the doctored photo of bin Laden from the site, but Llamazares said he wanted guarantees that the images were not still in the hands of intelligence services at airports or other places abroad.

He said it bothered him to think what would have happened if the FBI had used the photo of an ordinary person, and not a public figure able to draw attention to the matter.

"Most likely an unknown citizen on stepping into an airport would have received a good fright, if not something worse," the politician said. "If this is how security against terrorism is guaranteed, whose hands are we in?"

Llamazares, known as an anti-war activist in Spain, said he also wanted to know if the FBI has a habit of keeping files on leftist politicians in the U.S., Europe, Latin American or elsewhere. He said he doubted the FBI had found his photo by chance on the Internet.

Llamazares said he sent letters of complaint to FBI chief Robert Mueller, the U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and U.S. Ambassador to Spain, Alan Solomont.

The Spaniard also said the FBI used images of his hair to construct a photograph of another alleged terrorist, Atiyah Abd al-Rahman, of Libya.

The picture of Llamazares originally appeared on posters for his 2004 parliamentary election campaign. He said he found out about its use by the FBI through a newspaper article Saturday.

"I thought it was a joke," he said Monday. "As the morning the went on and the following day I began to believe it, and my indignation began to grow."

the pictures are fake, the videotapes are fake, the audiotapes are fake. the spooks just got caught this time, but they intend to keep the myth of the long-dead bin laden alive as long as plausibly possible, to drag out these wars.

Seems that USA and intelligence don't match. And when the one $crewed isn't cheerful for getting some bone of apology they are pi$$ed, pathetic.

Google Images!? Ha! Perhaps, our "intelligence" attached the wrong picture from their "watch-list".
These people want us to take off our shoes and stand naked before TSA and they have to search the internet to find a composite of a dead man??? Then they use an election photo of a communist party leader from a country in which we have prickly relations, and very recently are looking to reestablish good relations... Nice!

The U.S. "intelligence" could screw up a one car funeral...

Poor US, always the innocent victim of those pesky foreigners, huh?

This incident of endangering an innocent man's life is a foreign relations nightmare in Europe for our govt. Do you really think we need to return to how Europeans regarded the USA during the Bush era when many considered the USA & its close ally the most dangerous nations in the world?

What do we care? He's a 'furr-inn-er', fer petessake!
He doesn't have powerful lobbyist pals and he doesn't shoot people for money like Blackwater so he doesn't matter in our police culture or at State.
In other words, he's just like hard-working taxpaying Americans.

Makes me wonder about the FBI's judgment, and not for the obvious reason.

How many defense attorneys are going to point to this episode as an example of how that agency's work is suspect, when a case involves reconstruction of the facial features of human remains, suspect identification, or anything else involving forensic art?

Betrayed by laziness...

yes, ibsteve2u -- since Bush 2 there have been so many instances of "screwing the evidence" by bad example, it makes you wonder if today's Massachusetts' loss of a Senate seat wasn't done ... on purpose ... by the "pseudo" democrats. Coakley being a willing accomplice.

All the same, I understand this Spanish lawmaker being upset for being used as a "pawn in their game", to quote Bob Dylan.

"Barak offered an apology, its a take it or leave it proposition and good manners would presume most people would."

Oh yeah, sure. Imagine that a foreign police uses your picture to ID their #1 criminal. You're telling me you're NOT going to sue? Oh yeah, I forgot, foreigners should always shut up and comply with whatever craziness coming from the "greatest country on earth", right?

Bin Laden has been dead for years and the FBI has been using "doubles" for photo/video ops for sometime now. They just made the mistake of picking some random guy in the hopes he would never find out. WHOOPS!
In any case, this guy has probably been heckled before for looking like Bin Laden, which might explain why he noticed in the first place.
