Obama Orders New Crackdown On Federal Contractor Tax Cheats

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama on Wednesday ordered a new crackdown on federal contractors who don't pay their taxes.

Obama signed an executive order telling federal agency chiefs to take steps to bar those companies from receiving new government contracts. The order also directed the IRS to review contractor filings to make sure companies are not lying about the taxes they've paid.

Obama said the practice is inefficient, wasteful and, above all, wrong.

"It is simply wrong for companies to take taxpayer dollars and not be taxpayers themselves," Obama said. "We need to insist on the same sense of responsibility in Washington that so many of you strive to uphold in your own lives, in your own families and in your own businesses."

The White House said the move is part of the president's effort to restructure government contracting to eliminate waste and abuse.

That effort has included measures to end no-bid contracts and to crack down on what the administration deems improper payments. Administration officials estimate the measures saved as much as $100 billion last year.

Obama said studies by the Government Accountability Office have estimated that the U.S. is owed more than $5 billion in unpaid taxes by thousands of companies that are being awarded government contracts.

He cited the example of one company owner who was paid more than $1 million as a defense contractor while owing the government more than $1 million in taxes. But instead of paying his taxes, Obama said that individual bought a boat, cars and a home overseas.

Obama asked Congress to give the administration tools to stop this kind of abuse, including passing legislation to allow the IRS to share tax data with contracting officials to help catch tax scofflaws.

How about going after the $3 Billion that Federal EMPLOYEES owe the government?
.
Have we started reducing the waste in the Medicare / Medicaid system?
09:20 AM on 01/21/2010
The waste in the medicare/medicaid system is pretty much a figment of the Republican party. There is far more waste in the private healthcare system.
10:37 AM on 01/21/2010
Really? I would like to see some examples of waste in the private healthcare sector.

Facts: no suppositions, no rants, no spew, no nonsense.

OBAMA PUTTING SOCIAL SECURITY ON CHOPPING BLOCK:

Hope for lasting liberal change was washed away on Tuesday—not just with the loss of the Democrats' super-majority in the Senate, but with a closed-door deal that would lead to cuts in bedrock liberal programs such as Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.

While Massachusetts voters were casting their ballots to install Republican Scott Brown in Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat, President Obama was hammering out an agreement with Democratic leaders to support a commission on the deficit with the power to propose reductions to entitlement programs.

This proposal represents a capitulation to conservatives in both parties, and leaves liberals surrendering not only on health care, but on the core achievements of the New Deal and the Great Society...

Refusing to pay taxes is a form of civil disobedience; it is refusal to comply with the state's demand that you surrender your wealth. For those that disagree with the government's policies (e.g. pacifists) or those that refuse to recognize the state's authority to issue such demands (e.g. anarchists) non-payment of taxes is a symbolic act that aims to deprive the state of the funding needed to execute the policies that one disagrees with.

As with any act of civil disobedience, expect to be arrested, prosecuted, and imprisoned, for your refusal to comply with the nation's statutes. It is up to the individual to make the decision whether a government's actions warrant this extreme of a measure or rather if the electoral process is still a viable means of changing the policies in question.

WHAT ABOUT THE SUPER-RICH OFF-SHORE TAX CHEATS, OBAMA???????????

Why do the uber elite get a pass and amnesty?

And now, like Madoff, a sacrificial lamb if offered up to the masses to show "you're doing something".

Give me an effing break! What a hypocrite!

it's a start
07:14 PM on 01/20/2010
WOW...this is a start and one that is much needed...Geez...can he he get credit for at least doing this...If it was MCCain or Clinton this wouldn't be happening at all... President Obama began his presidency with so much against him and obviously he doesn't have enough good people supporting... advising...encouraging...and just being understanding of how hard it is to solve these problems. Obama did not create this problems... It took about ten years or longer of bad decision making that brought America this meltdown...do you honestly believe everything will be resolved in a year..two years...three years? How about this...why don't we start our own tea party and fight back like the conservatives. We also are to blame for the condition our country is in...for not being vocal...holding our own signs...calling these politicians (Rep and Dems) daily and allowing our voices to be heard at the same volume as the conservatives. The liberals, the progressives, or just plain Dems have to also take responsibilities for not CARING enough. Instead we whine on HP instead of holding signs.

What, and lose his cabinet and all those czars?
They account for most of the jobs saved or created. That would look very bad.
