Sitting Kills! Experts Say Too Much Sitting Could Be Deadly

Sitting Kills

LONDON — Here's a new warning from health experts: Sitting is deadly. Scientists are increasingly warning that sitting for prolonged periods – even if you also exercise regularly – could be bad for your health. And it doesn't matter where the sitting takes place – at the office, at school, in the car or before a computer or TV – just the overall number of hours it occurs.

Research is preliminary, but several studies suggest people who spend most of their days sitting are more likely to be fat, have a heart attack or even die.

In an editorial published this week in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, Elin Ekblom-Bak of the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences suggested that authorities rethink how they define physical activity to highlight the dangers of sitting.

While health officials have issued guidelines recommending minimum amounts of physical activity, they haven't suggested people try to limit how much time they spend in a seated position.

"After four hours of sitting, the body starts to send harmful signals," Ekblom-Bak said. She explained that genes regulating the amount of glucose and fat in the body start to shut down.

Even for people who exercise, spending long stretches of time sitting at a desk is still harmful. Tim Armstrong, a physical activity expert at the World Health Organization, said people who exercise every day – but still spend a lot of time sitting – might get more benefit if that exercise were spread across the day, rather than in a single bout.

That wasn't welcome news for Aytekin Can, 31, who works at a London financial company, and spends most of his days sitting in front of a computer. Several evenings a week, Can also teaches jiu jitsu, a Japanese martial art involving wrestling, and also does Thai boxing.

"I'm sure there are some detrimental effects of staying still for too long, but I hope that being active when I can helps," he said. "I wouldn't want to think the sitting could be that dangerous."

Still, in a study published last year that tracked more than 17,000 Canadians for about a dozen years, researchers found people who sat more had a higher death risk, independently of whether or not they exercised.

"We don't have enough evidence yet to say how much sitting is bad," said Peter Katzmarzyk of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, who led the Canadian study. "But it seems the more you can get up and interrupt this sedentary behavior, the better."

Figures from a U.S. survey in 2003-2004 found Americans spend more than half their time sitting, from working at their desks to sitting in cars.

Experts said more research is needed to figure out just how much sitting is dangerous, and what might be possible to offset those effects.

"People should keep exercising because that has a lot of benefits," Ekblom-Bak said. "But when they're in the office, they should try to interrupt sitting as often as possible," she said. "Don't just send your colleague an e-mail. Walk over and talk to him. Standing up."

I sit all day long, in a cube, working at a computer station. My family has a history of blood clouts. I worry. I try to get up and walk around the building every few hours, but I don't think it's enough. The life style of our modern society is deadly for our species.

So what's new aboout this? The problem with too much sitting is not the sitting itself but the absence of standing up often throughout the day. And it is not a question of staying standing instead of sitting that is important but the body needs frequent changes in posture throughout the day. Why? Because every time you stand up you challenge gravity. You generate a physical stress on your body, your nervous system, hormones and your circulation and these responses done up to a minimum of 30-36 times spread out throughout the day keep your body tuned, healthy and responsive. We learned this from numerous studies in astronauts living in space without gravity and healthy volunteers lying continuously in bed, the model used to produce space-like responses on the ground. Sitting is merely an extension ofusing gravity less which is what produces detrimaental aging-like changes in young people. For information see The G-Connection: Harness gravity and reverse Gravity published in 2004 and other similar studies.

Is it prolonged sitting...or prolonged absence of standing....that blew my mind.

Ummm... My favorite line in the article was "We don't have enough evidence yet to say how much sitting is bad..." I'm reminded of the Joe Jackson song "(Everything Gives You) Cancer," and a stand-up comic who implied that being afraid of getting AIDS can actually give you AIDS.

Come on, folks. No doctor knows anything about YOUR health. They know the average effects and dosages for the average (non-existent) person. Exercise is healthier than loafing, but your body can loaf a lot longer than it can exercise. Overdoing anything is bad, variety is good.

I refuse to spend a majority of my life doing things I hate to prolong my life so I can spend more time doing things I hate. Where's the logic in that? Yes, I'm a fat 53-year-old guy, but I'm also enjoying my life more than ever. When I'm dead, I'll be dead; for now, I'm having a great time. And I think it's kind of silly to worry about too much sitting, because worrying about it will kill you 64 times faster than sitting.

i worked at a call center for about four years. you had to explain getting up to use the restroom. about a 1,000 people at this center and not a week went by where an ambulence did not show up to carry someone to the hospital. when I started I was healthy, by the time I left my health was ruined (very poor area, only job you could get at the time.)

Ever see a barn full of chickens in cages? Or cows in stalls being milked?

Compare those cages to the dimensions of your cubicle, adjust relative proportions for size, and you can see you are living a similar existence. Perhaps the cows have you beaten.

LOL, I just made that analogy to my girlfriend last night, because I work in one of those cubicles.

So it's not the prolonged sitting but the resulting inactivity of "genes regulating the amount of glucose and fat in the body" that's harmful.

So if I'm spending too much time sitting, I probably already know it.

I guess it's a good thing I wait tables. :P

I do sit on my butt a lot when I'm not working though.

When I'm at work, I don't sit. I stand. Because if I sit, it's hard to get back up again. I meant when I was at home.

I'm trying to phase out of restaurant work, but it's definitely in my blood b/c I've done it so long. :)

I've been sitting way too much for many years and it's already taking a toll on my health... bought a standing desk and boy, my health improved dramatically. Legs were sore initially but once my legs were accustomed, I felt so much better. I don't feel out of breath. I don't feel palpitations. I don't have shooting aches on my chest (likely due to pinched nerves from sitting posture), and I also think better. I also sleep better. So, I am not surprise the study suggests sitting for long hours may be harmful. It makes sense.

Remember, it's well established that sitting for long time can cause blood to form clots and it's not surprising that it can cause cardiovascular deaths in "sitting" people.

I sit at a desk all day long at work and find it can actually be painful after a while. I have been sitting at a desk for the last 7 years.

It depresses organs, especially in people who have large tummies. If can also squeeze down the aorta, and curtail blood flow, raising blood pressure.

Tai Chi & Yoga both work to condition all body parts - even internal organs...so does gentle walking.

The Buddhists are SCREWED...

Haha but in all seriousness, I'd like to know some tips on how to disrupt the unhealthy bodily processes caused by sitting for long periods of time. Kind of like how they have hand/eye exercises to protect your vision and ward off carpal tunnel syndrome. Is it just standing up for a few minutes every hour, or are there specific movements that can be done while sitting?

In compu-land, they suggest 'taking 5' once an hour, get away from the keyboard, get up, stretch your legs, get the blood moving, get oxygen to your brain, because doing so promotes better concentration, a better mood, and ultimately, less stress. Some workplaces will only let you take breaks on a regimented schedule, clock in, clock out, and so forth, but more flexible jobsites recognize that people aren't robots, and need more frequent breaks away from The Box and The Phone. Sitting around a lot is VERY good, for the cable company. But, is it good for you? What's wrong with....OUTSIDE?!?!?!?! ;)
