Nuns Give $1M To Build Women's Homeless Shelter

Posted: Updated:

A Canadian group trying to raise money for a supportive housing center in Ottawa found out Thursday that those who "do unto others" are rewarded -- by the Grey Sisters of the Immaculate Conception.

The Roman Catholic nuns donated $1 million toward affordable housing for 42 vulnerable women, CBC News reported.

Sue Garvey, director of the Cornerstone, group building and operating the home estimated:

about 1000 women become homeless in Ottawa every year, and 10 to 15 are turned away from Cornerstone's emergency shelter each night.

"The lack of affordable housing for women in Ottawa is desperate," she said, adding that makes it difficult for the women to overcome other problems.

"Once they have that affordable housing, they'll be able to move on in their lives."
