'Extremely Thin' Models Cause Concern At Sao Paulo Fashion Week

First Posted: 03/24/2010 5:12 am Updated: 05/25/2011 3:15 pm

Creative Director of San Paulo Fashion Week Paulo Borges expressed concern over the "extremely thin" models on the country's catwalks, according to the AFP.

Brazil has age restrictions and mandatory health reports for anyone striking a pose, but Borges still thinks the runway girls look emaciated.

"This situation cannot be ignored. We would like to propose a joint effort towards minimizing this issue and preventing the effects of this trend on models, on our industry and on society itself," he wrote in a statement. There's no word yet on what measures will be taken.

No wonder fashion designers are gay. If that's your idea of what women look like....
12:22 PM on 01/25/2010
You know we have thin ballerinas and thin men and women, period. Some have to do things that show on the outside for their passion and joy in life, while others are like The Picture of Dorian Gray where what they've done to keep their jobs has destroyed their souls. I'm all for showing it on the outside.

So ugly . . . what is wrong with size 6 or 8 models parading down a runway in ridiculous clothes? The fashion world takes themselves too seriously.

I don't know . . . .
It's probably all the dead and dying anorexic models
that have been dropping like flies the last few years.
It seems to bring a bit of "seriousness" to the industry.

IMO, healthy is beautiful. On small frames, healthy is very slender and for larger boned people, healthy is a little bit bigger than "average."

Skinny is better than fat. But TOO skinny is not attractive either. Unless you're named Polanski the body of a 13 year old isn't too hot.

Whoever decided that skinny and scrawny were beautiful? Because lots of teenage girls think that is true and place themselves in danger due to dieting and purging.

Darling, many of them contrive to make beautiful women look like dumpy, colour-blind bimbos who got dressed in the dark. It's no wonder runway models never smile.

i think ill do community service work by throwing ham sandwhiches on the runway. poor things will probably trip and fight each other for the chance for a meal.

LMAO! So true!

I agree. I am pencil thin myself, always have been, always hated it. My daughter-in-law is 5' 9", don't know her weight but she has a beautiful figure in all the right places, and she would look WONDERFUL walking down the runway. There is nothing glamorus about too thin or too fat, no matter how healthy one may be.

Starving oneself to achieve this look is stupid.

Am I the only person who is disturbed by the numerous comparisons of these women to Holocaust victims or concentration camp members? Making cruel comments about models' bodies and holding young women to impossible beauty standards are BOTH symptoms of the SAME SOCIAL DISEASE. No one is doing average sized women any favors by making disparaging comments about thin (even anorexic) models. Women come in all shapes and sizes and unfortunately, misogynists come in many different flavors, too.

There's variation and then there's unhealthy. They have clearly crossed the line into unhealthy and what is misogynistic is to promote this as a female ideal.
02:57 AM on 01/24/2010
I don't disagree that imposing unhealthy standards of thinness on women is misogynistic, but being cruel to women over their physical appearance (whether it is healthy or not) also falls within the realm of misogyny. If posters were TRULY concerned about the physical and mental health of these young women, they would NOT be describing them as Holocaust victims.

And meanwhile, sales of women's clothing continues to decline...
Holiday Retail Sales Results Released
Holiday shoppers bought a little more jewelry, electronics and boots but passed by the women's clothing racks, according to figures released Wednesday...men's apparel fared much better than women's. Men's apparel sales rose 2.6 percent from Nov. 29 through Saturday. In contrast, women's apparel sales fell 2.8 percent.

WHEN will the fashion industry learn? Women--the vast majority of us, at least--are not interested in your product that you are marketing. Offer beautiful, functional clothing that works for women who are not starved and we will come back.

I guess designers think there clothes look better on a 'hanger' than on the human form. I wonder if it's easier to design clothes for a body that doesn't have all those curves and angles to get in the way. Seems like laziness to me.
