I'm a boomer - when I was a kid, just about everyone I ever saw was a vet, or had been in the merchant marine. Being curious - like any kid, I suppose, I would ask them about their tats. Almost to a man they told me they got them while drunk, had caved to peer pressure - and now regretted ever having gotten them. I was advised over and over to never get one. I never did. Now, of course, they are everywhere - I told my kids what I'd been told - and was ignored. So I said sure - if you want to show everyone how different and special you are, just do what everyone else is doing - if you want to run with the herd, you might as well get a brand. Well, the tattooed young people are becoming parents now and are soon to discover just how cool those tats really are - when their kids say "Please cover those up - my friends are coming over". 'Twas ever thus...

I saw that part of the interview, she is annoyed that tattooing has become mainstream and for her it was an act of personal rebellion. She was with Christopher Plummer plugging their movie of Tolstey and you could tell they liked each other, I hope they do more movies together. This movie looks like a movie you could sit down and watch, (without fast edits and loud sound tracks) It looks like it actually tells a story. Tolstey was an intriguing person and I loved his short stories.

What is it about Helen Mirren? Who cares about a silly little tattoo on her elegant hand, barely noticeable as she brushes a few golden strands of hair from herl cheek, laughing easily while casting a charming but brief sidelong glance at the camera? Not me.....

I don't imagine that Mirren will wear any one style haircut everyday for the rest of her life; there are two styles shown in this one post. She'll probably wear suitably current clothing styles every year and different in each climate season. She'll change her jewelry from day to day and noon to night depending on her mood or social schedule. But every day and every hour she's going to show the same tattoo on her hand. I cannot for the life of me imagine Helen Mirren that drunk.
