Lily The Bear
Lily The Bear, a black bear being observed by researchers in her den, gave birth to a cub today live on Web cam.

The "Lily The Bear Cam," a live Web cam of a black bear in hibernation in Minnesota, was in high demand today, as thousands tried to watch the bear's den upon news of an impending birth.

Lily The Bear did give birth to a cub today just before Noon today. An official Twitter update noted a few hours later, "Mother and cub are resting peacefully."

A blog post on the "Lily Den Cam," wrote yesterday, "Tension builds. Tomorrow is the day I wagered Lily will give birth."

Today the Lily The Bear Cam was experiencing server overload in light of the anticipation. A note was added, "We are experiencing some growing pains as we deal with record amounts traffic on the website. Please 'bear' with us."

The live Web cam was part of a research experiment led by Lynn Rogers of the Wildlife Research Institute to observe Lily The Bear's behaviors in the den during hibernation period.

The Guardian says that at three years old, Lily was the normal age for a bear to first give birth.

Lily The Bear also has a Facebook page and can be found on Twitter here.

Bears have returned to my county & they are welcome. We don't feed them & so far no problems, but Coyote has developed an appetite for small pets. They're inside towns & cities now.

Very cool video; not intrusive, respectful for the bear, let's promote animal welfare every time we shop. Check the container to see if it's labeled "animal cruelty free" and if it isn't, shop on.

This is the ONLY way that research should be conducted on any animal -- in the wild in their own inhabitat and not in captivity!

God bless these people who respect the animals enough to allow them to live their lives in freedom.

Bile from captive bears is a cruel hoax that is used in Asian medicine.
Educate yourself on plant-based medicines and Just Say No to Big Pharma's toxic synthetic Drugs.

Nope. Just a trick of the light. A bear's snout is similar to a dog's, only bigger. I suspect that like my dog, Lily has been snuffling in some dirt and her nose is covered with some light dirt, while the nostrils where it's moist are more of the natural black color, making it look a little like a pig's snout. But it's not.

Very true - I believe animals allow us to connect with the better part of ourselves, a part that society and so-called "civilization" trains us to ignore.

The oddest thing happened - while watching the video on my Macbook, once the cub started making noise, one of my dogs - a 3 year old male Pomeranian - started pacing and sniffing around under the stand I had my Macbook perched upon, pausing every now and then to look up at me and whimper, obviously upset and searching for the animal that he thought was in distress. He was so concerned he started to tremble. It took me about five minutes to calm him down.

See, ladies, bears give birth, too. So stop making it look like your are special because you give birth! ;-) :-D

I hope you are a women and have actually given birth making this comment . If not I think you should leave it up to women to decide on how they want to give birth to their children. Even if you are a women it still isn't any of your business on how other women give birth.

If you could not see the sarcasm in my comment then man it must be hard for you to wake up in the morning. THIS IS THE INTERNET!

You're right.
No woman should allow heavy, unnecessary drugs to be given to her while birthing.
You're a mom now, you have to think of the baby not yourself.
I did.

That was so cool! We know its lungs are working just fine! lol!

Okay, I see feet, fur and face. Where's the vagina? Don't cubs usually come out the vagina? Pretty underwhelming, if you ask me.

I'm sure the Wildlife Research Institute will be sure to have the bear pose in a more visible way next time. Just for you.

Hahaha.

My thought exactly.
