Gucci, Christie's Partner For Appraisal Website

Gucci and Christie's have teamed to create an appraisal site for vintage Gucci pieces.

The site, Gucci Collector, allows users to upload photos of vintage Gucci clothing to receive an appraisal of its value from Christie's team (in conjunction with Gucci's Archive Department). The service is free, and Gucci is the first fashion house to appear as a partner on Christie's website.

"I feel it is a noble, appropriate and modern way to provide access to original Gucci vintage products to a relevant and well targeted audience," Gucci president and CEO Patrizio di Marco said in an announcement. "This collaboration with Christie's is indeed fully consistent with our ongoing objective of reinforcing Gucci's reputation for luxury, quality and craftsmanship in our products. This new service will provide a 'trusted' venue for transactions of vintage Gucci items thereby avoiding recourse to 'uncontrolled' auction sites such as eBay."

Gucci and Christie's estimate a 2-4 week turnaround for appraisals, and they plan to inform users if their items would be appropriate for an upcoming Christie's auction or if either Christie's or Gucci would be interested in purchasing the item for their historical collections.

The appraisal site coincides with Gucci's plan to open a Gucci museum in Florence in 2010.

"The idea to establish a Gucci Museum is a way to celebrate the incredible story and heritage of this house," di Marco said. "Gucci has an extremely rich archive of vintage items that has never before been accessible to public viewing. Between now and the opening - through the new Gucci Collector Service - it is quite possible that Gucci's archivists, who are constantly on the look out for additional pieces of note, will add to this archive."
