Gilbert Arenas OUT FOR SEASON: Suspension Ends Arenas' Year

First Posted: 03/29/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 04:20 PM ET

Gilbert Arenas will be suspended for the remainder of the season, according to the Washington Post. The Post reports that Arenas asked for the suspension.

If the suspension goes through as reported, its 50 games will amount to the third-longest in NBA history.

The Wizards guard was suspended indefinitely earlier in the month following reports that he drew a gun on a teammate in the Wizards locker room. He pleaded guilty to a felony gun charge on January 14.

On Monday Wizards guard Javaris Crittenton pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor gun charge stemming from the same locker room incident. According to one report, Crittenton loaded his gun and chambered a bullet during his dispute with Arenas.

Update: Crittenton has also been suspended for the remainder of the season.

Adidas ended its endorsement deal with Arenas after his suspension, although he is still welcome to pose shirtless for PETA.

Arenas is a knucklehead who was paid far more than almost any of the bankers we all love to complain about. This guy couldn't lead a horse to water and the number of good things he could screw up in uncountable. He'll be deeply missed in our declining economy as he finds his alternate value in new areas of labor.

NRA probably thinks it's a violation of the Constitution to ban guns from athletic arenas. After all, if shooting breaks out you need to protect yourself. LOL.

This penalty make no sense. If there were only 20 games left would he be suspended "for the season."
What if there were 70 games left?

What is Stern basing his suspension on???

Stern should suspend him for a full 82 game season.

So take THAT all you 2nd Amendment f_reaks !!!

Suspension for the rest of the season. It's not enough.

Both he and Crittenton should have been terminated and banned for life from basketball and professional sports in general. If Pete Rose could be banned for life for merely betting on baseball then these two guys thugging it up with firearms with the potential for someone to be hurt or even murdered receiving only a mere suspesion is ridiculous.

Enough of the thugism in pro and lower level sports!

Agreed! A work place is a work place, period. Let him take his wares to the European league or even to So. America should he or his defenders complain about him being denied a livelihood.

It doesn't matter how harsh the suspension or heavy the fines, no one can legislate stupidity.

Yeah right. The only gun in America is in the NBA.

Why are they not going to prison? Will they get some sort of punishment besides losing a paycheck? Anyone else (you or I) would.
11:20 PM on 01/27/2010
Last I heard, neither the league nor individual teams could send a man to prison. As you should know, in order to go to prison, a guy has to be arrested and tried. That takes time.

Crittenton pled guilty to a misdemeanor. Not sure about Arenas.

Its seems like a lot of our role models in the sport industry have a past, like convictions, jail time, womanizing, etc. It is acceptable in a society where money and power is very important, no matter who gets hurt. I just wonder how the next generationof athletes conducts their business. In an armoured suit? Maybe, with a private army or an entourage of body guards. How will the public protect themselves from these new crop of athletes who may be armed to the teeth?

What role models?

Let's see. $140,000 plus per game X how many games? Plus Adidas? You'd expect something stewp!d like that from a rookie, but Arenas was supposed to be the Alpha male leader and role model.

Too bad Antawn Jamison doesn't quite have the talent of an Arenas. That's a stand up, blue collar player

Having been an Arenas fan, I am disappointed in his actions.

Than being said, I hope he gets a second chance....

And wasn't Arenas the guy who, after walking out of the courtroom said something about "when all is said and done I didn't even get a misdemeanor"? lol expensive misdemeanor.

"The Post reports that Arenas asked for the suspension"

At least, he understands now, it's no laughing matter anymore and took responsibility for his actions. He plead guilty to the gun charges, and ask to be suspended for the remainder of the season, without fighting the commisioner with the help of the Player's Union. He should be applauded for that. Now, how about them Cavs, 33-11.. I smell another MVP for Lebron!!

Imagine if the Cavs could pick up Arenas? Just a thought.

Nah, he plays good only when he's healthy and that's a rarity. He got the Oden syndrome.

Expensive blessing in disguise. His knee could heel further in the time off. He already proved he can come back to his previous level of play. He can learn, grow, mature from his mistakes. He can keep fit for future opportunities but prepare to step down in pay, but still enhance either the hapless Wizards or, if he's truly blessed, get out from under the W!zards inconsistent mediocrity and get picked up with a team that has a chance advancing in the playoffs and that could use his 30 to 50 points, or rapid offense off the bench. He's no thug, in my opinion.. He's a prankster that, hopefully, has learned a possible $150 million lesson.

He can make lemonades out of these lemons, but will he?

His next "shot" should be in Europe or some other basketball league. Gun ownership is serious business.
