Northwestern University Lockdown: Man With Gun Spotted On Chicago Campus

People were being allowed to leave Northwestern University's Downtown Rubloff Building Wednesday afternoon--three hours after the building was placed on lockdown after a man with a gun was spotted in an elevator.

About 10 a.m. Wednesday, a man with a gun in his waistband was spotted in an eleventh floor elevator of the Rubloff Building on the Chicago campus, according to an alert issued on Northwestern's Web site. The building is located at 375 E. Chicago Ave.

As of 11:40 a.m., there were no reports of injuries or threats, Northwestern spokeswoman Marla Paul told the Chicago Tribune.

The building was placed on lockdown as Chicago and Northwestern police searched the building. Residents, students and employees were being asked to stay in their offices and lock their doors.

As of 1 p.m., however, people were being allowed to leave.

"People in the building no longer must remain behind locked doors and are being allowed to move about in the building," according to the university's Web site. "However, access to the building remains restricted. Northwestern Law School will hold classes this afternoon."

The reported man with a gun was not located, and police remained on the scene Wednesday afternoon.

An FBI team also responded to the scene, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. They evacuated a nearby daycare center as they prepared to investigate.

No injuries were reported.

The school's Web site described the man seen in the elevator as a white male in his 20s, approximately 5-foot-9 with brown-blonde hair, wearing a button-down shirt, blue jean and a black jacket.
